Wolfe Tones opened their league campaign with a tough away fixture to Ratoath. The home side thanks to a blistering second quarter held an eight point half time lead and were never in trouble thereafter. The opening exchanges were competitive and the visitors led by 1  03 to 0  04 at the end of the first quarter. The Tones scores had come from Cian Ward who converted a ’45, Thomas Blaney (2, one free and one from play) and Fiachra ward who punched a Cian Ward centre to the net. However Ratoath notched 2  05 before the interval to a solitary point from the Tones (Eanna Harrington) to leave them in a very comfortable half time position, 2  09 to 1  04 ahead.

Ratoath added the first two points of the second half and then notched 5 wides before Tones eventually troubled the umpire with a Cian Ward point following good combination play from Fiachra Ward, Thomas Blaney and Peter Carroll. Ratoath maintained their grip on the game and led by 2  14 to 1  06 with 50 minutes played. Tones however enjoyed a period of ascendancy which yielded 1 03 between the 20th and 27th minute. The pick of the scores was the goal from Thomas Blaney who gathered a Fiachra Ward knock down and under pressure found the roof of the net. The other scores coming from Niall O Reilly, a fine long range effort, Cian Ward and Blaney.

Tones looked rusty in this opening season game and their cause was not helped when they lost the reliable defender Eoghan Harrington early in the game to injury. They did however show some of their old sparkle at times and were well served by Alan Callaghan who had a very impressive outing ably assisted by Eanna O Kelly Lynch and Gary Mc Fadden who covered a huge amount of ground. Up front Thomas Blaney, Cian and Fiachra Ward had their moments and did well on limited supply. Notably Peter Carroll and Aaron Tolan made their league debuts and are players for the future.
