Good evening everyone.

First of all, I would like to thank the Santa Rosa School Board for considering this strong resolution declaring climate change a children’s issue.

My name is Celeste Palmer, and I am a sophomore at Montgomery High School.

I am here today to voice my support for this resolution, because it is very important not only for my generation but also for future ones.

This initiative is a strong acknowledgement of the the importance of this issue, not only for youth, but also for life on earth as we know of it.  And I truly hope that this body will adopt it.

While we are pleased with most of this resolushen’s content, it does, however, lack explicit support for a price on carbon -- a crucial tool for mitigating the effects of climate change.

A carbon tax is an important and effective way of reducing carbon emissions.  In fact, according to the United Nations, Denmark’s greenhouse gas emissions reduced significantly after implementing a carbon tax.

Between 1990 and 2012, Denmark’s greenhouse gas emissions dropped by 24.7%.

For this reason, as well as others, I hope that you will consider issuing a carbon pricing endorsement resolution in the future.

By adopting a strong resolution declaring climate change as a children’s issue, the Santa Rosa School Board would be setting a precedent for other institutions of government to confront climate change.

Now, as you decide on the actions you will take on this issue, keep in mind that school board members are the only elected officials whose primary focus is to insure a good future for youth, and therefore it makes sense that you take the lead on mitigating climate change.
