The educational community of P.S. 186 is committed to ensuring that all students strive for and achieve excellence in academics, the arts, and citizenship. We promote strong communication between the home and school to plan an instructional program that challenges and engages students' thinking and creativity through school and home experiences. Language, ethnic and cultural diversity are respected as enhancements to student learning. We encourage the development of partnerships with parents, community, agencies, educational organizations, cultural institutions and the private sector to support our students in their journey.
To foster a growth mindset in all students that develops their ability to self-regulate, to persevere through challenging problems, and to empathize with their peers in challenging situations.
Children thrive when parents work closely with teachers and school leaders to build strong partnerships. As partners in education, parents, guardians, and family members have both rights and responsibilities:
We are dedicated to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all students and adhere to the NYC Discipline Code. You and your child can access the ‘Citywide Behavioral Expectations To Support Student Learning Discipline Code and Bill of Student Rights and Responsibilities’ online through the DOE website. All students will receive a student behavior contract that must be signed by both parents/guardians and students and returned to the school. Please review the code thoroughly with your child to ensure they understand it fully.
At PS 186, we have established our own set of non-negotiable rules that all students are expected to follow. Families are required to sign the Non-Negotiable Rules Acknowledgment Form to confirm understanding of the following expectations:
September 2024- June 2025
As per the NYC Discipline Code, consequences for breaking
school-wide rules may include the following:
Schoolwide messages will be sent out with important information and reminders, as needed. Your child's teachers will also set up Remind classroom accounts to relay important information to you. Remind will send messages to your mobile phone as a text message or to any device that is set up with the Remind mobile app.
You will receive more information from your child’s teacher regarding how to receive notifications. Please be sure to keep your number updated with your teacher and the school. Please be reminded that teachers can not check Remind messages while teaching which means messages may only be answered during preps and parent time.
Please be respectful of staff’s personal time after school and on weekends when sending Remind messages. Please be sure to download the Remind App before the start of school in order to receive important notifications from your child’s teacher and the school. If more than one guardian would like to receive messages, please let your child's teacher know and the additional contact number will be added.
Each student is given a school folder in September as a means of communication between teachers and parents/guardians. Parents or guardians should check this folder daily for important notices, information or work that has been sent home. Please send back all forms that must be returned to school in a timely manner. Please be sure to keep folders neat, organized and accessible for teachers to continue sending home updated notices, information and work.
For your convenience, our school website is maintained to provide up-to-date information such as school happenings, upcoming events, and other important announcements regarding our school. Information on the webpage can also be translated in over 50 languages. Please visit it regularly, as all important school related and DOE related updates will be posted here as soon as they are available. All Remind messages can be found at the bottom of the website.
For important messages we also utilize an automatic telephone service to reach families. In order to provide the best service, be sure to update your primary phone number whenever necessary. Messages will be sent out translated.
There is a message board outside of the school building that relays important announcements regarding important dates and events that take place at school. Please be sure to view the message board in order to stay updated regarding important school dates.
P.S. 186 has launched its very own PS 186 Instagram account in order to share special events and happenings throughout the school year. The Instagram app must be downloaded on a device to access this information. Enjoy learning more about us!

ELA and Math homework is given each night for all students. It is expected that parents or guardians review their child’s homework every night. Your child will also be given a reading log, which must be monitored as well. Students are encouraged to read nightly to support the Chancellor’s initiative to Read 365 days out of the year!

Early Dismissal
Prior notification, in writing, must be made for any early pick-up . Please make every effort to schedule appointments outside of school hours. Early pick-ups are strongly discouraged because of the disruption it causes to classroom instruction.
For security reasons, no child in any grade will be dismissed early unless picked up by a parent or guardian and signed out in the main office by someone who is on the blue card. Our office personnel will arrange for your child to report to the main office at the time requested.
To ensure the safety of all of our students and maintain the most up to date records, all families will be required to sign and return important forms throughout the school year. Important forms and notices will be sent home in your child’s school folders.

Only individuals listed on the blue card have permission to pick up a child.
NYCDOE Attendance Policy
PS 186 will adhere to the NYCDOE Attendance Policy. Please read through this document carefully and become familiar with the expectations.
Please review the following important guidelines that PS 186 is following as part of our Attendance Policy:
Attendance every day is required for students’ academic success. Perfect attendance is the goal. Having 90% attendance means a student is missing 18+ days over a school year—nearly a month of instruction—and are at risk for dropping out later in school. With regular attendance, students learn the skills and habits to succeed in their academic and social lives. Any time a student is below the 90%, they are considered chronically absent.
NY State regulations require schools to maintain records that verify student attendance. Attendance will be recorded daily. Late arrivals and early departures must also be recorded.
A student who is not in school when attendance is taken each morning is marked absent for the day. If the student comes in late, the teacher will be able to change the ‘absent’ to ‘late’ before the end of the school day. Absences may be excused (but not eliminated) for reasons listed below. Excused absences will still appear as absences on a student’s records. The attendance team will follow up with families about persistent attendance issues, including recurrent absences that may be considered excused.
**Whenever possible, families are expected to schedule appointments, including school visits and doctors’ visits, outside of regular school hours, or to schedule appointments first thing in the day or at the end of the day so the student does not miss an entire day of school.
When a child is absent, you may call the school at (718) 236-7071 or email 20K186_Attendance@groups.schools.nyc and we will address each situation individually.
When a student returns from a full-day absence, he/she must submit a note or documentation to his/her classroom teacher or submit it via Remind. A record of the absence (excused or not) will be shared with all of the student’s teachers and the school administration.
**For any absence, students must make up any exams, quizzes, screeners, interim assessments, or other tests. It is the family’s responsibility to coordinate make-up work with the teachers.
If a student is out for an extended period of time, families are asked to attend a conference and complete a transition plan that will include a schedule for missed classwork during after school or Saturday upon return. Please make sure all contact information is up-to-date so that we can reach you with any questions or concerns if your child does not return in a timely manner.
Every family of a student who is not in school by the time attendance is taken will be notified through a phone call. All families should provide a reason or documented note to explain the absence.
It is very important to keep all contact information updated. Please alert Lori Picardi, Pupil Accounting Secretary, at lpicardi@schools.nyc.gov of any changes to address or phone numbers and be prepared to provide appropriate documentation and proof of address.

A student is considered late if they do not enter the building before 8:10 am. Any student who is late must come through the front entrance where they will receive a late pass. All latenesses are documented. Latenesses cause a disruption in instruction and affect a students’ progress. Please ensure

The school calendar is posted on the https://www.schools.nyc.gov/calendar/2024-2025-school-year-calendar and www.PS186.com. They are updated to show upcoming school events and testing schedules. It is also shared at the PTA and all school events.
No number of absences can prevent promotion to the next grade or graduation. However, it is more likely that a student who misses school will have lower grades, test scores and may not meet the academic standards for promotion or graduation and are in danger of being “Promotion in Doubt”.
Special Circumstances
When hazardous conditions develop because of inclement weather, an announcement to close schools or delay openings will be made by television, radio and other communications devices, including the NYC DOE website. A message will also be announced on our school website, ps186.com and a phone messenger and Remind message will be sent home. If the school building is closed for any reason, all students will be working remotely. All students should know how to log on the Google Classroom.
Notify the school nurse or your child's teacher immediately if he/she has any medical concerns.
Currently, all schools must implement GRP where appropriate to respond to safety/emergency situations that may result in an evacuation, shelter-in or lockdown. In accordance with New York State Education Law Section 807, all schools are required to conduct four lockdown drills per year in addition to eight evacuation drills, for a total of twelve emergency drills annually.
In the event of a serious threat to the school building, students will be evacuated to one of the following sites listed below:
