Our session will begin by acknowledging common concerns surrounding AI in education and offer strategies for leveraging it as a “Thought Partner” in instructional design.
Now more than ever, knowledge of and experience with AI tools is valuable in preparation for college and work forces; however, many educators are still scratching the surface of what it has to offer. Many districts do not have policies that have been fully established. As more AI continues to be available, we need to explore ways to support appropriate use of AI that will help teacher instruction and student learning, without jeopardizing originality and academic integrity.
We will share what our district has done thus far in regards to creating our own narrative of how AI will be implemented in our school. We want this session to be collaborative, and welcome all to share their thoughts and experiences. Be ready to engage in conversation, while testing out some AI tools. We hope you leave our session with ways to support AI in your district.

The fusion of AI and a Growth Mindset has become a powerful combination for educators and students alike. As a tool, AI fosters personal and professional growth, and the cultivation of a Growth Mindset enhances adaptability and resilience in the face of change, especially technological change. To support teachers’ acceptance of the changes AI brings to teaching and learning, Growth Mindset concepts and change management strategies are necessary. The Growth Mindset, a concept popularized by Dr. Carol Dweck, empowers individuals to embrace challenges, persevere through setbacks, and believe in their capacity to grow. Inherent in cultivating growth is the challenge of managing change, as change often engenders fear. Therefore, leaders must manage change within an organization using a structured and thoughtful approach that addresses vision, knowledge, skills, resources, and reinforcement.
In this conversation-based session, we will share our District's journey to support teachers’ discovery of the synergy between AI literacy and Growth Mindset as told from multiple perspectives - Assistant Superintendent, Technology Director, Supervisor of Assessment, and Supervisor of Curriculum. Using our story as a case study, participants will engage in discussion, share experiences, ideas, and ultimately identify best practices for creating a supportive community dedicated to fostering growth and embracing AI. Join the conversation as we explore how engagement with AI in academic settings fosters a Growth Mindset and promotes conditions for teachers and students to develop new literacies. Most teachers struggle with integrating technology into their instruction. Industry reports suggest that only 15% of K-12 teachers in the US get personalized support from instructional technologists in their schools or districts. The impact of this is that technology is either not used much, or it is not used purposefully.
AI can make it less difficult for teachers to plan lessons that incorporate EdTech tools. Opportunities include identifying tools that can support instructional goals, generating ideas for lessons with specific tools, or developing draft lesson plans. There are likely many more ways in which AI can support increased technology integration.
In this session, we will cover 3 key topics:
1) Review several ways in which Techoryze (an EdTech startup) is using AI for instructional technology support
2) Conduct a facilitated brainstorming session to come up with more ideas for how AI could be used for instructional technology support
3) Discuss how ideas can be prioritized and tested with teachers |

ChatGPT has teachers worried about "AI plagiarism" on student writing assignments. A July survey conducted for the nonprofit Junior Achievement revealed that 44% of teens are likely to use AI to do their schoolwork instead of doing it themselves even though 60% consider it cheating. Students outsourcing their writing to AI chatbots bypass the productive struggle needed to build the foundational critical thinking and cognitive skills (e.g., organization, sequencing, synthesis, etc.) normally developed during the writing process. AI detectors like GPTZero and TurnItIn have exhibited concerning false detection rates and proven unreliable in catching this problem. What to do? Assess the process, not just the paper! Shifting focus from the end work product to the process is a game changer for preventing AI plagiarism. Come learn about this pedagogically sound approach from Victor Karkar, the Cofounder of Scrible, which enables students to "show their work" through the writing process via student-generated artifacts (e.g., research, annotations, citations, outlines, etc.) that serve as proof of authentic work. Based on a distillation of his many conversations about AI with school district and college leaders this year, Victor will also share common pitfall perspectives to be avoided when considering the proper place of AI in education. This includes banning AI apps on school devices, embracing it in the classroom because it’s useful in the workplace, writing only by hand or in class without wifi, and more. He’ll explain how we can - and why we must - mitigate the main risk of generative AI while still preparing students for an AI-enabled future. |

With the proliferation of generative AI tools and their potential for positive use as well as misuse in the classroom, educators are recognizing the importance of designing "AI-resistant" learning experiences and assessments. In this session, we'll focus less on "AI-proof" assignments and more on the design of authentic tasks and projects that allow (and require!) students to demonstrate original, creative thinking.
We'll start the session by breaking down the essential elements that make for great AI-resistant experiences. Next, we'll look at a variety of examples of experiences designed by other educators. Then, participants will have a chance to brainstorm and the design their own learning experience. We'll do this all on a collaborative learning and portfolio platform, called Inkwire, that allows students to document their process and their thinking in a variety of media formats. This will also enable attendees to design their experience in a portable format that they can take and directly use with learners back at home.
We'll close with a discussion on "AI-compatible" learning experiences, which actually allow students to leverage generative AI in authentic ways as part of the learning process. We'll discuss the pros and cons and appropriate times for using AI-compatible versus AI-resistant learning.
Come with a computer (ideal) or mobile device, and optionally a partner from your organization that you can work with to brainstorm and co-design your learning experience.
This session will be led by Aatash Parikh, an educator and software engineer, who has worked at organizations including High Tech High, Oakland Unified School District, and Khan Academy.
