Virtual Job Interview Tip Sheet
● Fully dress to impress – Including your username and profile picture – Keep both professional, and dress as you would to a normal interview from head to toe
● If you live with multiple people in your household make sure you let everyone in the house know ahead of time that you will be doing an interview and need space
● Find a quiet, appropriate and clean place to make the call – a desk with a plain background is fine, but be aware of visible clutter
● Do a sound and connection check beforehand with a friend or family member
● Do a lighting check – Do you look washed out? Is it too dark?
● Have your attachments – resume, cover letter, portfolio – in front of you before the call, so you can reference them easily and not have to click around
● Practice speaking to the camera, not the screen – it’s hard not to look! Put your mini Skype-window of your image below the webcam itself so you will appear to be making eye contact
● Close all other windows that may distract you – especially chat windows that make sounds
● Move around and stay animated! Remember, you’re confined to a small screen, so be sure to engage the interviewer
● Technical malfunctions may happen – Stay positive and patient!
● Follow up as you would with any normal interview
