Oh, the joys of parenting….Our children bring us delight through their laughter and humor, amazement though their perception and surprise through their imaginations. Every day with them is a new adventure. They make us feel loved and important through their warm hugs and dependence on our care.
BUT, oh, the frustrations of parenting...In front of the wrong people, at the wrong time, they have a knack for saying the wrong things! They get sick on the exact day of something important that we have planned. They dirty our clean house before we can even finish cleaning and stain the newest and most expensive outfits. They humble us in public and make us feel like failures in private. This is also parenthood….
You can not get around this truth: parenting is challenging! Our children have needs and we naturally want to meet these needs. But we quickly realize that we can’t do it all. Who do we rely upon? Authors of best selling books? Their teachers? Our parents? Our the people next door? As wonderful as these resources may be, they also fall short. When we place our confidence in these areas we find ourselves too stressed, tense and anxious to enjoy the parenting process and our children.
Moms and dad, please understand that you will never have perfect children, ever...none of us will. You will never be the perfect parent...none of us will. However, we do have a perfect God whose grace takes up the slack of our failures.
Take encouragement from this verse 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weakness, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weakness, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake, for when i am weak, then I am strong” If we take our strength from God he will direct us in how to bring up our children in a way that is pleasing to Him, as we nurture their hearts and steer them toward right choices.
At Crossroads, we desire to come alongside you with support and practical ideas on how to parent with joy and purpose. We would love to meet in person with you and join you in your parenting journey. We will be offering a 6 week parenting class on Sunday nights: August 12, 19,26 and September 9,16,23. There will be a kids ASL class offered at the same time, which will serve as childcare for the class. Please sign up on the church website www.tracychurch.org if you would like to attend.
It has been our privilege to get to know you and your kids this week. We hope to spend more time with you in the future, as part of your parenting journey.
