Kia ora ko Anthony ahau.  I am a Year 6 student at Mangonui School.

Who thinks that Friday’s at school should be optional? I certainly think that they should be. How cool would it be to have an extra day off to enjoy your weekend? I will convince you that Fridays at school should be optional and why children of New Zealand need a shorter school week.

The facts show that kids need 10 hours of sleep during the 24 hour loop.  Tiredness affects their learning. Kids get tired from running around the school, riding on the scooter track, playing on the playground and doing jobs.  Instead of spending the day at school, kids could spend the day at home resting.

Now I have a joke: Friday and Saturday were in a fight. Who wins,

Saturday because Friday is a weak day.

Imagine this ...if kids get Fridays off then Adults could too. That way there will be someone home to look after you. Adults get sick of being at work all day, every day. So that way you can spend more time with family. You can have more movie nights, board games, quality time, fishing, beach days and spending more time in nature. Of course they will still get paid. I am sure Jacinda will be fine with that!

It is clear that Friday is a funday, so we won’t be missing out on much at all at school.  Instead of learning at school you can be learning at home, like we did during lockdown. At home we have more equipment at our fingertips to make and create inventions, like the pulley system I made and had hanging off my dad’s workbench. We won’t be held back by bell times and the end of the day, instead we would be free to create all day long.

Sometimes the weekend might feel shorter because you play sport on Saturday which tires us out, from giving it our best. I am at soccer all day and on Sunday I do lots of jobs we all get tired!

Get my point!

I will conclude my argument with a summary of my main points.  Firstly, kids might need more sleep because kids might not get much rest even on the weekend, secondly, kids might get sick of being at school 5 days a week.  Finally, more quality family time is important.  Sincerely Anthony.
