Mac or PC: Which will it be?

By: Giao Pham

If you are looking into investing in a new computer, you might want to consider your options before entering the chaotic battlefield that is Black Friday.  Of the two titans, which team are you on— Mac or PC?

Today, the two most widely used operating systems on computers are either macOS or Windows.  As of right now, Apple is the only developer to utilize macOS on their MacIntosh, or “Mac”, computers.  On the other hand, Microsoft licensed Windows to many other manufacturers such as Dell, HP, ASUS, and Lenovo.

If you are switching from PC to Mac or vice versa, you must get used to the design.  By choosing Mac, you are favoring the sleek, simple and trendy design of the models.  If you select a PC, you are open to a variety of models from the numerous manufacturers that offer features such as the touchscreen and foldable or detachable displays.  Both systems perform similar functions, but the layouts are different; each system utilizes different keyboard shortcuts.

Before choosing, you should weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each.  Even though Apple provides only a limited selection of models, and Windows come in all shapes and sizes, that much variety can be daunting to choose from; it will be hard to decide which model is the one.  Apple is innovative and uses the high-speed Thunderbolt 3 ports, USB-C cables, and a multi-touch trackpad, but these devices are not customizable and a lot of adaptors are required.

PCs, however, allow the user to upgrade the memory, hard drive, processors and much more.  This allows PC to potentially have a much more powerful graphics card, making the PC much more favorable to gamers.

When it comes to viruses and malware, Windows are the main target due to it being the most used system.  There is less risk on a Mac, but the encounters are becoming more prominent due to the growing popularity. When it comes to pricing, Macs are more expensive with prices starting at $1,000 (but you can get a certified refurbished model at a discounted price).  As for PC, there are more inexpensive models for as little as $180.

So with Black Friday coming up soon (Nov. 24th), hopefully, you can snag one of these powerful machines.  Consider your preferences and decide: will you be joining Team Mac or Team PC?
