EDGI’s Conflict Resolution Process: Overview
Contributors: Kelsey Breseman
This folder (link) contains resources for working through a community-mediated conflict resolution process.
Each process will be unique but draws from A community-oriented conflict resolution framework for EDGI as a primary resource, a toolkit adapted for EDGI from a restorative justice handbook. This document includes worksheets and approaches for all participants in the conflict resolution process.
A template process outline might look like this:
- Establish who is the process owner/mediator (probably someone approached by one or multiple parties in conflict)
- Process owner establishes a private folder where this process is documented, lists themselves in Conflict resolution record & access, and sets up a cadence for the work (e.g. regular meeting of multiple community mediators)
- All documents should be submitted to the process owner so that their access can be set appropriately
- Everyone (including mediators) completes an Entrance Agreement
- Entrance Agreement: Party in Conflict
- Entrance Agreement: Mediator
- Boundaries that are set in the Entrance Agreements will be collated and shared with all parties by process owner
- Mediator(s) figure out first steps based on pre-work from A community-oriented conflict resolution framework for EDGI (case specific)
- Everyone (including mediators) does selected pre-work establishing ground rules and goals, send to mediator(s)
- Mediator(s) propose a set of ideas for changes for each party in conflict + for EDGI as an organization
- Participants look at proposed changes for other party + EDGI and give yes/no on whether this resolves their goals
- Participants assess feasibility of proposed changes for their own behavior and devise an accountability plan (mediators devise accountability plan for organization)
- Implement accountability plans
Due to the inherently sensitive nature of this work, all documents related to specific cases are kept in private folders. This document lists who to contact about a specific case: Conflict resolution record & access
