Grade 3 General Information
Snack Money- All snacks sold at school are $2.00. If you would like to send a snack from home for your student, that is also permissible. Teachers will not be responsible for snack money.
Conferences must be scheduled. Please do not drop in before school or during the day unless you have an appointment. You can use email or classdojo.com to arrange a conference for after school if completely necessary. Communication with teachers must be done through Class Dojo or email.
Class begins promptly at 7:45. Students may not be dropped off at school before 7:15. Students that do not ride the bus MUST enter school through the lobby. All tardy students must report to the lobby desk/office for an admit.
School dismisses promptly at 3:05. All of the doors will be kept locked. You will only be allowed entry through the front door where a camera is set up.
Please use the PikMyKid App for afternoon transportation changes. Please make these changes by 2:00, otherwise we might not get the notification from the system/app in time. If you do not use this app, a note MUST be sent to school informing us of those changes. The note must be approved in the office. This means that if your child is to ride a different bus/be let off at a different location, then he/she must have a note. It will be your child’s responsibility to make sure the teacher receives the note. It really is best to use the app for all transportation changes. Even if your child always rides a bus, the app can be useful. Example: Your child’s bus breaks down. A phone call can be made to all parents of children on THAT bus to inform them of the problem.
Absences can’t be avoided, but they can be made less disruptive. If your child misses even part of a day, important classwork is missed. A lot of learning comes through activities that are almost impossible to replicate on another day. Send a note for every absence, even if it is for part of a day. Include the date(s) missed and the reason. This will be turned into the office so that your child’s absence can be excused. Please arrange for your child to log on to Google Classroom to complete work missed during the absence.
Homework Every child is responsible for work assigned in class. If your child doesn’t complete this classwork, it will be sent home for homework. In math, daily fact practice will be assigned once we begin memorizing facts. Later, the other facts will be added to the fact practice. A Math Newsletter will come home at the start of each topic with vocabulary and examples of completed problems to be used for help at home. Other homework will consist of studying for tests. In ELA, study guides will be sent home for spelling, vocabulary, mid-unit and end-of-unit tests as we make it through the units. For the AR portion your student will be responsible for reading books and taking quizzes during the school day. For Science and Social Studies, vocabulary needs to be studied weekly and study guides for each topic of study will be sent home. There will also be geography maps to study, that we will test on monthly.
No Excuses folders with pockets will be used. Each pocket is labeled with a different subject or title. Example: The first pocket is used for sign and return. You need to check this folder daily. It is your child’s responsibility to make sure all papers/work is in the folder in the correct location.
Classdojo.com is used in grade 3. Each teacher will post updates in the Class Story section for dates of upcoming tests. This is especially important for Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies because we test after topics/units are completed and that will not always fall on the same day of the week. Teachers will also use classdojo to notify parents about other important events taking place through Class Story (example: Kona Ice announcements, Spirit Weeks/Dress Up Days). We also use the messaging part of ClassDojo to communicate directly with parents when there is a need.
Water You may send water with your child daily. Water is very important to stay healthy and hydrated. You may send an empty water bottle if necessary and the bottle can be refilled at the fountain. Only clear water bottles with a top that seals after opening is allowed. The container must seal off completely so no spills will occur.
Classroom management We use Class Dojo for the reward part of our classroom management plan. Students earn points in class that they can redeem for prizes at the end of each nine weeks. We also use a “choice log” to document behaviors at school. Your child makes the “choice” to not follow a rule. That behavior is written on a log and is signed by your child. If your child has to sign the choice log 3 times in one day, he/she will receive a step. When the log sheet is full, we send that home to be signed and returned. Hopefully, you’ll never see a log sheet this year! If so, please talk to your child about the behaviors that are written on the log sheet. We appreciate all of your help!
