→ I AM A PRO

Can I play for the USA/CAN Schools?

Simple answer: NOT REALLY… BUT YES.

IT DEPENDS CASE BY CASE…

Ok so it is NOT SIMPLE LOL —> The answer most people think or say is "NO!".... WRONG!

———> (BUT) <———

Each league is different… Pro will be in quotes (“pro”) from now on because there is not a strict definition for athletes outside of the USA/CAN where these schools are because in other countries sport is separate from school in almost every way and that IS NOT how it is in the USA/CAN.

Here’s a crash course on all options in USA & CAN ——>

(Tag friends if this help you understand everything better!)

→ STUDENT-ATHLETE vs “PRO”-ATHLETE

#1 YOU GET AN EDUCATION/CULTURAL EXPERIENCE TO PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE/WORK AFTER SPORT!

#2 YOU CAN GET PAID A FE OR SEVERAL THOUSAND FOR LIFE THERE + SAVE TO SEND SOME HOME!!

“cost of attendance” is part of a FULL SCHOLARSHIP for NCAA D1 schools = 5-10K+ per year (explained more later)

#3 CONDITIONS & EQUIPMENT:

Even the lowest levels of over 1000 schools are better than 80-90% of pro teams and all in one place!

#4 STAFF & SUPPORT:

Coaching staffs from 3-5 coaches, doctors, nutritionist, chiropractor, sports trainers, strength coaches, sports psychologist and mental coaches.

#5 TRAVEL QUALITY:

High vs low: In the USA at D1 schools you will often travel via private jets, tour buses, quality vans, etc.

#6 MAYBE GET A USA PERMANENT VISA (If you even want one haha)

#7 INCREASE YOUR LEVEL / GET MORE FROM PRO VOLLEY OUT OF COLLEGE!

#8 THERE ARE TOO MANY BENEFITS ;P

(e.g. Mia Jerkov, Jana Matiasovska, Milica Kubura's, Mari A. Hole's, Nikki Ning Zhao's, Bassam Beidas', Tabi Love's & more!

→ WHO CAN PLAY?

BUT, I CAN’T GO BECAUSE I SIGNED TO PLAY PRO! = FALSE!

JUST BECAUSE YOU…

#1 Signed a pro contract

#2 Received money to play

#3 Started college already

….these are NOT reasons alone for you to be INELIGIBLE…

#1 USA/CAN realize the system is different for international students so this is not a problem!

#2 Each case depends on the amount of money and what it was covering!

#3 “5 to play 4” from the day you start a college course you have 5 years to play 4 possible years in the USA’s NCAA league! Note: This rule is less strict for the other leagues and can be VERY FLEXIBLE even considering ages!

——————————

→ TRUTH (FOR INTERNATIONALS ONLY!)

WORDS YOU MUST KNOW!

ELIGIBLE / INELIGIBLE : Being able to or not able to do something based on certain rules by someone.

In this case, whether or not you would be considered “pro” = ineligible or “amateur” = eligible in the USA/CAN by their schools!

NCAA D1 schools have playing levels up the the Champion’s League levels for top schools. Team USA players come from these schools.

ELIGIBLE = Proving money paid to you covered things like: school, transportation, food, housing, medical, supplies for school/sport, coaching and instruction, competition and practice apparel, equipment and supplies, facility usage aka court time/fitness, entry fees, etc.

This is all called COST OF LIVING/PLAYING then you could be 100% able to play for a D1 schools, etc. This makes you ELIGIBLE which gives you AMATEUR ELIGIBILITY to play for the schools that require it before schools can accept you on their teams.

p.s. Signing with a professional agent/agency (you or your parents) is considered a violation of eligibility for All NCAA / NJCAA schools. Because this means you are trying to get more money for sport and that is what shows your intentions are not on school but money first. So cancel this today if you want to maybe go to the USA/CAN…

→ AGES RECRUITED?

NCAA D1/D2 top schools have the resources (staff size and budgets) to start recruiting players from 13 years OLD all the way until they have completed college eligibility (5yrs to play 4yrs)!

This means that if you are 13/14 years old or older you should start keeping videos and sending them to schools you might want to go to!

→ WHEN DOES THE “CLOCK” start?

This means when do schools start counting the time left you can play for their schools!

NCAA D1 clock start 1 years after you graduate from high school (tennis is 6 months.. hockey/skiing is after 21st birthday)

NCAA D3 is school by school meaning each school will decide.

JUCO’s & NAIA’s & CANADIAN SCHOOLS may accept much older student-athletes as long as they didn’t compete in that sport after high school (rules different for each league!)

PRIVATE HIGH SCHOOLS accept and recruit foreign athletes too. Contact us directly about this elitevolley.com/contact

→ LEVELS OF USA/CAN SCHOOLS

#1 USA’s NCAA league with 3 divisions (levels) called Division I “D1”, Division II “D2”, and Division III “D3” based roughly on school size. Each division is made up of several conferences for regional league play since USA is HUGE and over 1280 school teams total in this league

(eligibility required for athletes for D1 & D2 | Athletic scholarships only in D1/2)

#2 USA’s NAIA league with 1 division/level for about 250 smaller schools with a level similar to NCAA D2 sports & 3 schools are actually Canadian!

(eligibility required for athletes but less strict than NCAA)

#3 NJCAA aka JUCO (Junior colleges) with 3 divisions (levels) are 2 year ONLY colleges covering the education of the 1st two years of schools and more specific trades. Athletes go here if they cannot get to a higher level school because of grades and/or eligibility and/or their playing level isn’t good enough. There are around 330 schools with volleyball.

(eligibility required for athletes | Athletic scholarships only in D1/2)

#4 CANADA SCHOOLS

(More soon but some have players from all over the world like Poland, Germany, France,Ukraine, Serbia, etc! Some are able to offer free school too!) One school like Chad Grimm's TRU WolfPack volleyball team!

MORE ON #1 USA’s NCAA league

(Usually most young TALENTED top league internationals fit in at one of these schools especially when a top 20 ranked school)

Note: Generally, larger schools compete in D1 and smaller schools in D2 and D3. In order to be in the D1 level schools must have teams in at least 7 sports for men and 7 for women or 6 for men and 8 for women, with at least 2 team sports for each gender + offer a certain amount for scholarships, etc etc.

NCAA D1’s = 334 teams for indoor volleyball and 47 for beach volleyball (different sports with their own scholarships)

——————————

→ USA NCAA D1 FACTS:

What is an athletic scholarship?

An athletic scholarship can be given to ONLY student-athletes playing a sport at that school. It can ba part (partial) or full scholarship. D1’s can give 12 for each year in women’s indoor volleyball.

Note: an academic scholarship is given to anyone meeting the highest standards of academic scores and excellence. Each schools has different scales for what scores are acceptable (or not) in school and SAT/TOEFL tests!

What it covers?

-Tuition + Living + Meals + Cost of Living

You can you get paid money?

-YES! Cost of Attendance (by semester including summer school)

What is it exactly?

It is estimated based on ALL the costs of living at you school like expenses such as: tuition + room and board (flat & food) + books and supplies + personal expenses + transportation there + possibility of flying between your country and USA = Cost of Attendance

Once they know that number…

They subtract how much your family can afford (sometimes nothing) & how much your scholarship will give you (Full ride = all tuition + room & board) the rest is what you will get to use for cost of living. :)

How much you get which can be $5,000 to over 10K per year at some schools (different everywhere)

Total PAID will make sure you can live, study, eat, get around and do normal things.

THIS IS BETTER THAN MOST EUROPEANS UP TO 22 years old will ever make in their teams for 8 months a year!
