Studio Policies

Welcome to Clay in Clay out Pottery Studio.  We are excited to share our studio space with you.  Because we are a small space, we have policies to make the studio a positive learning environment for all participants.

Cleaning Policies:

Proper cleanup is required for the health and safety of the studio.  Long term exposure to clay dust can lead to poor health outcomes.  Each student/member will receive mandatory training on proper cleaning procedures.  Students/members are required to clean up after each class or pottery session.  Clay in Clay out Studio uses a three-strike policy on cleaning. Anyone who does not clean after using the space will receive two warnings.  A third volition will result in dismissal from the studio and no refund will be given.

Cleanup includes the following:

Clay is very detrimental to plumbing systems.  Because of this, no clay is allowed to be put down the sink.  Our studio uses a pre-rinse method with all clay and slip being disposed of in buckets prior to washing tools and bats in the sink. Anyone putting clay in the sink will be immediately dismissed from the studio and no refund will be given.

Outside Clay and Glazes:

Clay in Clay out Studio provides studio clay and glazes for students enrolled in classes and clay for purchase by members. In order to encourage artistic exploration and expression, the studio will consider requests to use outside clay and glazes.  Particularly when new glazes are being tested, the studio may require students/members to fire test tiles placed on glaze cookies to determine clay/glaze compatibility and glaze run potential.  All clays and glazes must be cone 5-7.

Studio Equipment:

Students/members may only use equipment they are trained to use.  All damaged equipment must be reported to Clay in Clay out Studio immediately.

Studio Storage:

Each student/member is provided one shelf to store clay, glaze and equipment.  Items must be stored on the provided shelf and cannot be left on the floor, counter or tables.  Due to this limited storage, students can choose to bring their personal clay, tools and equipment home. Studio to cannot be taken out of the studio.

Production or High-Volume Artists:

Clay in Clay out Studio is a learning studio.  Due to size and capacity limitations, the studio cannot accommodate production or high-volume potters.  Student’s receive one (1) 25lb bag of clay for use during the entire six (6) week class.  Studio membership includes the firing of 15 mug sized pieces a month.  Members can produce more than this, but are limited to firing 15 mug sized pieces or the equivalent in other sizes.

Firing Procedures:

Kilns are fired according to the needs of the entire studio. Kilns will be fired when there is enough work to fill a kiln.  Clay in Clay out Studio will not fire kilns to meet student/member’s personal deadlines (birthday present, art show, etc.) Requests will be considered, but it is the prerogative of the studio to determine the kiln loading and firing.

Each piece must pass a set of standards in order to be fired. The studio reserves the right to reject work that is unsuitable for firing. Examples are below:

Damages:

Clay in Clay out Studio is not responsible for the loss or damage of work or personal property. All pots, fired and unfired, are fragile. Handle everything with care in the pottery studio. Do not handle other people's work.
