Exaltation of the Savior

Opening:

Text:

Hebrews 10:25 KJV 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

John 4:19-24 KJV 19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Introduction:

We often have a misconception of what things will be like in Heaven.  Many have the tendency to think that we will stand around the throne throughout eternity praising God with a loud voice.  With this in mind the statement has been made that our worship here is just practice for Heaven.  These ideas could not be farther from the truth.  It is true we will praise and worship in Heaven and we do learn here some of what will take place there, but the Bible makes it clear that we will also have responsibilities in Heaven.  In other words we will have a job to do.

  1. The Purpose of Worship
  1. To Bring Pleasure to God
  1. Revelation 4:11 KJV 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
  2. The object of much worship, especially among the younger generations, is little more than self-gratification.
  1. We Are Commanded to Worship
  2. To Edify the Body of Christ – Colossians 3:16 KJV 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
  1. The Regulation of Worship
  1. For Edification of the Body – 1 Corinthians 14:26 KJV 26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
  2. With a Pure Heart – Matthew 15:7-9 KJV 7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
  3. In Spirit
  1. Body
  2. Soul
  1. Intellect
  2. Emotion
  3. Will
  1. Spirit
  1. In Truth
  1. The fact that Jesus pointed out that “true worshippers” would worship in spirit and in truth indicates that there are false worshippers.
  2. Proverbs 15:8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord; but the prayer of the  upright is his delight.
Decently and in Order – 1 Corinthians 14:27-33 KJV 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.  28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29  Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. 31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
In Love – 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 KJV 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,  5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;  7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.  9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.  11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.  12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.  13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
    The Method of Worship
    Lifted Hands
Music – Psalms 150:1-6 KJV 1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.  2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. 3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.  4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.  5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. 6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.
    Singing – Ephesians 5:19 KJV 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
    Psalms – Speaking to God
    Thou Art Worthy
    Hear My Cry Oh God
    How Great Thou Art
Hymns – Doctrine – telling others about God
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
    Amazing Grace
Spiritual Songs – Testimony – What God has done for you
    Victory In Jesus
    An Old Account
I Was There When It Happened
Working – Matthew 5:16 KJV 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
God’s Word – John 17:17 KJV 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
    Silence
    The Object of Worship
    Self
"What turned that bovine into a false god? It became an idol when the people began valuing it more than they valued God. They gave that golden calf their best, putting all their wealth and resources into making it. They put all their time into designing and creating it. And then they agreed together as a community, “Let’s worship this thing! Let’s make this more valuable in our hearts than anything else.” And with that, a golden calf became a god.
If our goal in worship is to reach a state of euphoria then our motive is wrong.  The focus is on oneself rather than on God.  When this happens we are worshipping the creature more than the creator.
Two times in Revelation, John began to worship the wrong individual.  Our worship is wrong when it is:
    Sensual
    Self-Centered
    Showy
    Others
