This Recruiting and Applicant Privacy Notice ("Notice") applies to individuals who attend or participate in recruiting events, seminars and other activities, or who apply for employment ("Applicants" or "you") at Yelp Inc. ("Yelp"). As part of our recruiting and hiring practices, we collect and process personal data relating to you.


This Notice describes the types of personal information that we may collect and process about you, why and how we may collect and process that information, and third parties with whom we may share your personal information. You can access information about Yelp’s data retention practices here.


We respect your privacy rights and are committed to handling personal information responsibly and in accordance with applicable law. If you have any comments or questions about this Notice, please contact us as described in Section 6 below.

  1. Types of Personal Information We May Collect and Process About You
  1. In the course of your relationship with Yelp, we may collect and process personal information about you. The types of personal information we may collect and process include, but are not limited to:
  1. There may also be situations where you provide us with sensitive personal information like your race, ethnicity and gender or information about disabilities you may have so that we can comply with anti-discrimination laws and government reporting obligations, provide reasonable accommodations, and/or ensure equal employment opportunities.
  1. Sources of Personal Information
    In most cases, the information we collect about you is provided by you in the first instance, including through the Yelp Careers site, in conversations with members of Yelp’s recruiting team, at Yelp recruiting events, and through Yelp’s candidate relationship management (CRM) system, but there may be situations where we collect personal information from other sources as well. The following are other potential sources of information and examples of the types of information we may receive from those sources:
  1. Third-party services (e.g., LinkedIn and GitHub) may display or disclose your identification data, employment history, and work samples;
  2. References may disclose information regarding your employment history, work performance and other personal information about you;
  3. Yelp employees may provide feedback in the course of evaluating your candidacy;
  4. Cookies are sometimes used to store and retrieve information to make the site work as you expect it to and to improve and personalize your experience. The information does not usually directly identify you, but cookies may transmit information about you such as your browser type, search preferences, IP address, and the date and time you visited the site.   5. We may store information you provide when registering for, or in connection with your attendance at Yelp events (such as career events). This information may include your name, address, email address, phone number, and other information relevant to the event. Yelp may also film and/or photograph the event(s), including the attendees, which may be used for marketing and/or promotional purposes, including on our website, social media channels, and in marketing/promotional materials. You will be notified if an event may be photographed or filmed by Yelp, for example, in the invitation or on signs at the event; and
  6. Our and our third-party providers' information technology systems may collect information about your interaction with those systems (e.g., our applicant tracking systems may reflect that you've applied for a position or submitted documentation associated with your candidacy).
  1. Purposes for Collecting and Processing Personal Information
  1. Yelp collects and processes your personal information primarily for the purpose of managing our relationship with you (e.g., to evaluate your application for employment), and for other internal business purposes like recordkeeping. Processing your data allows us to manage the recruiting process, evaluate a candidate's suitability for employment, and make decisions around offers of employment.
  2. We may use your personal information to, among other things, provide you with information about the event(s) for which you have registered (such as event updates and possible changes, cancellation, or similar information), for general administration and organization of the event(s), in accordance with your preferences regarding other events, news, services, and job opportunities, to ask for your feedback after an event you have attended, and to plan better future events.
  3. Yelp may also collect and process personal information when it is necessary for other legitimate purposes. For example, we may process your personal information to investigate breaches of our own internal policies, such as those regarding use of the Yelp website.
  4. Yelp may also collect and process your personal information where we consider it necessary to comply with laws and regulations (e.g., for anti-discrimination laws), under judicial authorization, or to exercise or defend the legal rights of Yelp and its parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, joint ventures, and other companies under common control.
  1. Third Parties With Whom We May Share Your Personal Information

Yelp takes care to allow access to personal information only to those who require such access to perform their tasks and duties, and to third parties that have a legitimate purpose for accessing it. Whenever we share personal information with a third party, we have or will implement appropriate measures to ensure the information is processed, and that the confidentiality and integrity of the information is maintained, in a manner consistent with this Notice.
  2. We may share your personal information with Yelp's parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, joint ventures, and other companies under common control for recruiting as well as other legitimate business purposes (e.g., IT services/security and general business management).
  3. We may share certain personal information with third parties that provide services to us, for example, to contact your references or conduct background checks. We do so on a "need to know basis" and in accordance with applicable law.
  1. California Residents’ Rights Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”)
  1. Yelp does not sell your personal information and will not do so in the future without providing you with notice and an opportunity to opt-out of such sale as required by law. Similarly, we do not offer financial incentives associated with our collection, use, or disclosure of your personal information. Nor does Yelp share personal information gathered in the course of your application to Yelp with third parties for the purposes of targeted behavioral advertising.
