Klodran, Colomadu, Karanganyar, Solo

On Friday, 1 June 2018, we had the 11th klenèngan in the 14th fiscal year of Pujangga Laras at our home in Klodran, Colomadu, Karanganyar, Solo.

For this occasion, the guest group known as Sanggar Bima played, in our series of guest group wayang troupes doing klenèngan repertory. Sanggar Bima’s director is Ki Manteb Soedharsono and they play for some 80% of his performances and are his official resident troupe. Sanggar Bima does not have a drummer for klenèngan repertory, so they invited Mas Untara to join them.  Originally from Banyumas, he is a well-respected young drummer on the scene, mostly in Sragen.  Their wayang drummer was Bapak Narto for decades, a legend who passed away some years ago. Then the drumming position moved to Sukamto/Sanggar Bima (former husband of foreign pesindhen Agnes Serfozo for those interested in all the details), but now rests firmly in the hands of an ISI-graduate East Javanese wayang drummer named “Gedhe” who is not comfortable with extended klenengan repertory for a situation like this.

Sanggar Bima’s senior musicians, who are all very close friends of Mas Wakidi’s (i.e., people we will encourage to come to PL as often as possible in the future) are:

• rebab: Bp Gendhon (Ceper, Klaten, former member of Condhong Raos)
• gender: Bp Legiyo (already regular at Pujangga Laras, plays at the Mangkunegaran as well)
• gerong: Bp Sunaryo (“old Sragen karawitan friend”)
• slenthem: Bp Purwanto (“old Tawangmangu klenengan friend”)

Last night we spent Rp 13,700,000 which at the rate of Rp 13,000 = $1 comes to US$1053. This included an envelope that was given to Ki Manteb Soedharsono to divide amongst the musicians himself, live-streaming of the event, and sound for the vocalists.
