JONAH COLLINS - Artist Statement

The reason I chose this way to represent myself in my portrait is because I didn't see a lot of shadows in the portraits being done, I like to be different. I created a silhouette  with the first two noticeable features of me, I braided fabric to replicate my braids and cut my glasses out of felt. The way I relate my work to the theme is by showing how I believe people see me. That is why I put questions in the background asking “what do you see.” The title of my artwork is a number code that spells Jonah, my name. Like I said, I like to be different. Succeeding in realizing the American Dream depends on what you look like. This is what they judge you off of and how they are going to look at and treat you, but it is our job to show we are much more. Making the quilt was a first for me but I accepted the new challenge. I like that I created little imperfections, and we can live with them. Something I learned is that it is by doing the small things that you can do so much in art and life.
