Culture project

Français 4, 5, AP

World language cannot be learned without culture. They cannot be separated!

To help you understand culture, we’ve identified the three kinds of culture into the 3 Ps. They are: products, practices, and perspectives. Simplified, the products are things, the practices are actions, and perspectives are beliefs or ideas of a group of people. Can you identify specific products, practices, or perspectives from the image below?

CULTURES

INTERACT WITH CULTURAL COMPETENCE AND UNDERSTANDING

We can compare culture to an iceberg. When we first think of culture, we usually think of products, or the things we can see, touch, hear, taste, and smell. However, that’s only the tip of the iceberg. And the iceberg is much, much larger under the ocean.

In your own words, explain what the 3 Ps are below:

products / produits- ____________________________________________________

practices / practiques- ___________________________________________________

perspectives / perspectives- _______________________________________________

This year, in French class, we will explore the 3 Ps together. You will be able to identify the 3 Ps and their relationships to each other. You will also have the opportunity to explore the 3 Ps further to understand why cultures have and do certain things.

Each quarter you will be expected to explore one product, practice, and perspective and tell how they relate to each other. Mme Behn will present products and practices in class, but it’s up to you to select one of the lessons to explore further. You may write your project up below, or you may type it up as a Google Doc and share it with abehn@janesville.k12.wi.us.

To help you, I’ve included some guiding questions for you. Please complete the assignment in French. I’m not expecting perfection, but I want you to try!

What is the product and practice from the lesson?

From your research, what is the perspective of this culture? Why do they do what they do? What beliefs do they have that make the product important? You may have to make an inference.

Is the product, practice, or perspective similar to something in your culture? How?

Is the product, practice, or perspective different from your culture? How?
