Hebrews 11: Faith That Moves Us Forward
Faith and Spiritual Heritage
————————————————————————————————————————
As we continue on in our series in Hebrews 11, we are shown the importance of healthy spiritual heritage. In verses 20-23, we see a great spiritual heritage play out when Issac blesses his son, Jacob. Then Jacob blesses his son, Joseph and his sons. Then, it was through Joseph’s life that Moses’ parents would save him from the king’s wrath.
So, the question becomes: How do we pass on a healthy spiritual heritage? We talked about four ways to do this.
- Pray over and with your children and grandchildren
- Take some time now to pray over each other's children and grandchildren. Ask if there is anything specific that can be covered in prayer.
- Teach with scriptures and stories
- How can you pass on a spiritual heritage by telling your stories of faith?
- Model in public and private
- What you do speaks louder than what you say. Discuss this.
- Reinforce with rituals and traditions
- If you have children, what type of rituals and traditions do you have with them?
- What type of rituals and traditions did your parents teach you when you were growing up?
When there is no healthy spiritual heritage…
- Read 1 Corinthians 1:20-22. There are those of us who have been more hurt than helped by spiritual heritage. There are many reasons for this and could happen through a parent, mentor, or pastor. But, God’s yes to you is Jesus himself. It is not found in any person on earth, only in Jesus.
- If you have been hurt in this way, let this be your focus (as a group, pray these things over those who have spiritual hurt)
- Let Jesus make today a new starting point.
- Forgive and don’t be defined by your past
- Reshape your thinking around who you are in Christ
- Love Jesus with all your heart and soul
