Candidate Statement:

As the current Vice Chair of the MSSNY Federal Candidate Evaluation Committee and member of the MSSNY PAC Executive Committee, I have had significant involvement in MSSNY advocacy activities over the past several years.  I truly believe that the patient physician relationship is directly impacted by legislation determined by our elected officials and that it is imperative to optimize the use of MSSNYPAC and relationships with elected officials to advocate for our patients and profession.

Throughout 2019-22, I worked extensively with MSSNY Senior Vice President Moe Auster and other MSSNY leaders to organize numerous in person meetings with Congress members offices in New York and Washington D.C. that were well attended by physician colleagues.  I was most fulfilled that I was able to recruit colleagues who had previously never been involved in advocacy and give them the opportunity to see first hand how critical it was to tell elected officials our stories.  As Councilor, I hope to utilize my current relationships with MSSNY leadership to develop ways to increase New York physician engagement in advocacy.  Specifically, I hope to present a plan of action to expand physician recruitment to our Annual Lobby Day as well as increase physician engagement at county legislative meetings throughout the state.

I have also utilized social media in a creative and effective manner to champion and educate the public on various advocacy issues.  I believe that I can contribute to MSSNY Communications on how we can further leverage social media to achieve our goals as an organization.  As a member of the MSSNY Long Range Planning Committee, my top priority has been to encourage further modernization of our website and branding and serving as Councilor would help me raise awareness of such needs at the highest levels of MSSNY leadership.

My commitment to contribute to MSSNY for the long term complements my goal to utilize organized medicine to protect our patients and profession.  My mentors have continually reminded me that "Effective advocacy is a marathon."  I understand that change does not come overnight and that moving the needle takes long term commitment.  I also recognize the importance of having a united voice with all physicians speaking up for our common interest that patients come first.  Although I have had opportunities to be involved with my specialty society, I have always felt that MSSNY is home as I get to learn from my non surgical colleagues and also see MSSNY's effectiveness in bringing together all our competing interests under one unified House of Medicine.
