Celebrating All Cultures
Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month:This month we celebrate the culture, history, and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in New York City and across the country. The reason the month of May was chosen was to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, in recognition of the Chinese immigrants who made up a majority of laborers completing the work on the project. In addition, it commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the United States on May 7, 1843.AAPI Heritage Month celebrates communities with roots throughout the Asia-Pacific region, encompassing the entirety of the Asian continent, as well as the countries and territories that make up the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Coming from such a wide geographical area, the Asian American and Pacific Islander community has a rich and varied history and culture to learn more about all month long. Addressing Trauma, Social and Emotional Well Being
We are focusing on specific grades where students seem to have more need. For example, 4th grade may have more students with infraction in OORS over another grade so they would be a grade that is focused on.

Q&A
PTA question: Can a child be held over if reading isn’t up to par? Is there a choice that the parent can make.
Response: Mrs. Simpson explains process of looking at the whole student when considering whether a child is heldover or promoted, at the school level and through communications with the district and central offices. However, there is room for conversation with the family.
PTA question: Will promoting a student that is not ready lead to placing a student in District 75? Parent expresses concern that a child may inevitably be placed is District 75.
Response: Mrs. Simpson explains process of evaluating a student with assistance of Mrs. Joshua and assures parent that child will not just be “jumped” into District 75.
PTA question: 5th grade child polled his peers and found that student body would like to see more arts. Parent expresses thankfulness for creating more clubs and would like to know if it is possible to get more arts teachers (Music, art, etc…)
Response: Mrs. Joshua responds that art was included in past practices. Administration found a way to include arts in the curriculum, ie: hiring a sub that comes in a certain number of times per week to work as an art teacher.
Mrs. Simpson reflects on grants and programs that we did weave in this year (Marquis studio, Ballroom, etc.). Mention of a sub that we know can teach music. We will look into having Mr. Archer to commit as a sub for the next year. The school is looking into another company that will work with various grades to teach music, pending funding.
Mr. Archer- can he commit as a permanent sub that implements a music program (ie: Music Mondays with Mr. Archer, or use a “Music substitute” as the teacher for days when we would hire a sub anyway to cover teacher meetings and PDs.)
We can dedicate time in day to art, as in drawing and such. For example, students enjoyed art activities at recess when they could not go out.
