Mentor/Mentee Expectations
The General Brown Central School District recognizes the valuable role provided by a mentor to new teachers. The purpose of the mentoring program, as set forth by the Commissioner's Regulations, is to provide support for new teachers to ease the transition from preparation to practice. The goal of mentoring is to increase the skills of new teachers and assist districts in retaining highly qualified teachers. More importantly, the benefits accrued from a mentoring relationship ultimately help the students. Educators acting as a mentor to the new classroom teacher as part of a school district or BOCES’ mentoring program may, at the discretion of the school district or BOCES, credit up to 30 hours towards their CTLE requirement in each five-year registration period.
Mentor Expectations:
- Attend the New Staff Orientation luncheon with the mentee in August.
- Attend a mid-year and end-of-the-year meeting with the mentee and the building principal.
- Share your knowledge about lesson planning, useful classroom management strategies, long and short-term planning, and curriculum development.
- Assist the mentee in preparing for the first day of school.
- Help mentees with procedural demands of the school (lunch count, announcements, nurse’s office, arrival/dismissal procedures, grade reporting, attendance).
- Provide moral and emotional support and function as a sounding board for new ideas.
- Assist mentee with developing classroom management and discipline procedures.
- Engage mentee in self-assessment and reflection on their own practice.
- Provide support and honest professional feedback as mentees experiment with new ideas and strategies.
Mentee Expectations:
- Use active listening skills during discussions with your mentor, take notes when appropriate, and ask questions.
- Receive feedback with a positive attitude. Your mentor will provide honest feedback and accept it as an opportunity to strengthen and improve.
- Honor your mentor’s time.
- Be prepared to ask specific questions and seek guidance and advice from your mentor.
- Let your mentor know that you have followed advice and/or suggestions, even if you modified the suggestions. Pointing out that you used your mentor's suggestions and sharing outcomes is important for the mentor/mentee relationship.
Log of Program Activities:
- Mentors and Mentees will be paid at the contractual curriculum rate for 7 hours per year outside of the contractual day to meet together. These hours are in addition to the new staff orientation day traditionally held at the end of the summer.
- Mentors and Mentees will submit a Mentor/Mentee form on Frontline to be paid for the hours met that occurred outside the contractual day. This can be done at any time after the completion of the 7 hours.
