Unit 1 - Working with Ambient Light

Week 1 - Working with Shadows

Due Date: Fall - 8/24 | Spring - 1/11
Assignments 1 - Shadowplay
Description - Students will cover
the rules for the Dorman High School Digital Photography program and then will use shadows as their primary compositional element to create dynamic, high-contrast images.  

Week 2 - Utilizing Reflectors in Fashion Photography

Due Date: Fall - 8/31 | Spring - 1/18
Assignment 2 - Reflectors 
Description - Through the use of reflectors to create fill light, students will utilize ambient light to create minimalistic fashion images.

Week 3 - B&W + Figure/Ground

Due Date: Fall - 9/7 | Spring - 1/25
Assignment 3 - Utilizing Figure/Ground in Black & White Photography 
Description - Students will study and incorporate Gestalt psychology into their compositions to create moody black & white photos that make use of the Figure/Ground relationship.

Week 4 - Finding the Light

Assignment 4 - Finding the Light
Description - Students will study dynamic light and capture it in landscape images.  

Unit 2 - Making Your Own Light

Week 5 - One-Light Studio

Assignment 5 - Basic Lighting Patterns 
Description - The student will demonstrate how to use studio lights to create the basic lighting patterns used in portraiture.

Week 6 - Styles of Lighting

Assignment 6 - High Key / Low Key Lighting
Description - Students will set up and utilize various studio lighting setups to create both high key and low key portraits.

Week 7 - Working w/ Speedlights

Due Date: Fall - 10/5 | Spring - 2/22
Assignment 7 - Bounced Flash
Description - The student will use an on-camera speedlight to create portraits on-location by bouncing the flash to create pleasing light.

Week 8 -Table-Top Studio

Due Date: Fall - 10/12 | Spring - 3/1
Assignment 8 - Product Photography on White
Description - The student will set up a table-top studio, complete with studio lights, to achieve “catalog white” backgrounds in finished product shots.  

Unit 3 - Beyond Basics

Week 9 - Color Grading

Assignment 9 - Faceless Portraits
Description - Students will explore creative portraiture that unironically doesn’t focus on the face. Students are encouraged to use creative lighting/framing/Photoshop/etc. in order to create interesting and unique portraits.

Week 10 - Harmony in Composition

Due Date: Fall - 10/26 | Spring - 3/15
Assignment 10 - Chiaroscuro Lighting
Description - Students will study Chiaroscuro lighting and hunt “pools” of light to create dynamic compositions.  

Week 11 - Street Photography 101

Assignment 11 - Street Photography
Description - Students will study basic concepts and techniques for taking street photos, as well as studying ethical, legal, and safety concerns.

Week 12 - On-Tripod: Long Exposures

Due Date: Fall - 11/9 | Spring - 3/29
Assignment 12 - Light Painting
Description - Students will use long exposures in conjunction with creative lighting techniques to create light painting images.

Description - Students will use long exposures in conjunction with creative lighting techniques to create light painting images.

Unit 4 - Real-World Scenarios

Week 13 - Expressing Yourself

Due Date: Fall - 11/16 | Spring - 4/12 (4/1-4/5 is spring break)
Assignment 13 - Open Project I
Description - Students will create a small but cohesive collection of images based around a common theme, technique, concept, or editing style.

Week 14 - Event Coverage

Due Date: Fall - 11/23 | Spring - 4/19
Assignment 14 - Event Coverage 
Description - Students will practice on-location event photography by covering a school event of their choice.  

Week 15 - On-Location Portrait Session

Due Date: Fall - 11/30 | Spring - 4/26
Assignment 15 - Portrait Session 
Description - Students will apply and adapt the techniques they learned using studio lights and bounced flash in order to use off-camera flash for a portrait session on -location with a model (or models).  

Week 16 - Learning from Others

Due Date: Fall - 12/7 | Spring - 5/3
Assignment 16 - Deconstructing Light
Description 18 - Students will study techniques for viewing others’ works and determining how they were set up, (and/or lit), and then will choose 5 of their favorite photos (from either past or current photographers) to attempt to recreate.

Assignment 20 - Portfolio  
Description - Students will study both photography and Photoshop techniques used to create “levitation” images. Students will also choose their best images from the semester and use those in a portfolio website they create using Portfoliobox.
