DISCHARGE SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS
PLEASE NOTE: These instructions are to be followed as a general guideline.
Any change to these instructions will be discussed with you by Dr. Petersen.
1. FILL PRESCRIPTIONS specified by Dr. Petersen or his staff. Make sure you inform Dr. Petersen of any prescriptions or over the counter medicines that are taking to prevent interactions.
2. Do not take any aspirin or aspirin like medications (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, etc.) for two weeks post-op. These drugs may increase bleeding. If you have any questions concerning any medications, contact Dr. Petersen.
3. Smoking causes wound healing problems. It is REQUIRED that the patients stop smoking 6 weeks following any surgery.
4. The ace bandages, brown elastic tape, and gauze bandages, any dressings should be left in place until post-operative examination or as directed by Dr. Petersen.
5. Application of ice packs to chest can help for the first 24-48 hours post-op. This may help to reduce swelling, bleeding, and discomfort. You should ice for 20 min. on and 30 min. off. Make sure to wrap ice in a towel. Do not place ice directly on the skin or incisions. Placing on top of incisions my decrease blood flow & cause poor healing.
6. Sponge bath until Dr. Petersen says you can shower. Showers are then permitted 48-72 hours after surgery. Be sure to dry all areas as well as possible. Wash and put post-surgical garment back on immediately. No baths, hot tubs, or swimming for 6 weeks after surgery. This can cause infections.
7. Watch for active bleeding, extensive bruising, abnormal swelling, fevers over 101.5 (temperature to be taken with a thermometer), chills, fainting, chest pains, calf pain, or shortness of breath. Drug reactions are also of concern. Contact Dr. Petersen if these occur.
8. If you were not given an appointment time, please call the office to schedule your follow-up visit.
9. No exercising, heavy lifting, heavy exertion, heavy housework, etc. for 6 weeks. Too much activity can cause excessive bleeding, implant displacement, and/or swelling.
10. If you were given a post-surgical to wear, wear the post-surgical garment 24 hours a day for at least 6 weeks, except for showering.
11. If for any reason the patient becomes unresponsive, delirious, or you feel something is seriously wrong and needs immediate attention, call 911 and/or go immediately to the nearest ER.
