Introduction

The Terra Libre - Free Earth - Project is a project that I have been working on for the majority of my adult life. The simple idea is that through the application of automation we can create a society in which the basic needs of people are automated enabling the many and providing a foundation for society.

A Universal Standard of Living.

Capitalism has brought us to an incredible point as a society, but that foundation is exceptionally fragile as it is magnified to the global scale. In order for the system to continue, it has to find some cohesion.

Automation is sold currently as the enemy of the working person, but the reality can be quite different and should be different. By utilizing advents in technology combined with high level automation it is entirely possible to create a functional community where all of the basic needs (food, shelter, water) can be not only provided by the system but entirely created as well enabling the populace to focus their creative and professional efforts in directions that better suit them and allowing a greater amount of creativity to re-emerge into communities.

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to families?

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to crime?

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to education?

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to expression?

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to the quality of life of people?

It is not a departure from capitalism, in fact, a basic tenet of capitalism is that more people consuming at a higher rate are always good. This removes capitalism from basic needs and replaces it with an egalitarian model powered via technology and not on the backs of people.

Universal Standard of Living instead of Universal Basic Income

Universal basic income isn’t the answer, but an adjustment to the standard of living is. UBI is placing a bandaid on a bullet wound. Automation and AI will continually and more rapidly morph the job market into something that will vastly alienate most workers. The idea of a UBI can sound appealing when the finer details begin to get answered the fairness, cost, and actual benefits become very questionable at best.

But how to fix the bullet wound then?

Similar to the way we would in real life we repair the foundations first - remove the bullet and fix the underlying tissue, and then we let the body, the system do the rest of the work. A Universal Standard of Living creates a foundation for society (the body) to grow and thrive around as it wants to do.

Enabling society.

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to families?

While certainly debatable, one of if not the largest burden on a family unit in today’s society is financial. This financial burden is a root cause for many societal pitfalls as the stress that it induces is unlike any other. Not only does financial struggle come with the painful reality, but the existential crises, as well as people, invariably view the individual in a different light. This compounding effect leads to poor behavioral choices, family splits, and death.

But what if you could change that entirely?

Where does that financial stress come from? Initially, it is certainly being able to provide for yourself and those that you love. That notion is terrifying to most people and something that we can solve.

If you have a community where The basic needs are provided (3d printed home & automated garden, access to education) and access to the internet you eliminate this fundamental pitfall in capitalism and enable a populace that instead of searching to survive is venturing to thrive.

Removing that stress and enabling that lifestyle will have a dramatic impact on the family. Creating much more quality time together and thereby stronger relationships and stronger value systems which leads to a much stronger society.

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to crime?

Theft in all its forms accounts for the vast majority of crime in many areas around the world. It also seems to be more prevalent the greater the income/wealth gap is between the people of a given area. It isn’t hard to imagine why theft seems to be correlated to financial disparity, especially when you magnify it with broken families, education gaps, and lack of basic needs.

But what would happen if the basic needs were provided, more families stayed together due to the removal of financial stress, and everyone had 24/7 access to education?

With the removal of the struggle to survive, the drive to steal as opposed to achieving becomes a more difficult choice to make. Combined with the ability to be educated in any discipline you want, for free, anywhere, anytime and you have a recipe to inspire instead of divide and create community instead of distrust.

There is certainly other forms of crime and this alone will never eliminate all crime, but it would stand to reason that, people being a reflection of their life experience+genetics+current state, we would see a decline in crime as more positive moments and opportunities along someone's journey in life has been shown to create better rounded and happier individuals.

For crimes that do get committed, the same system that enables each person to vote and be a part of their community will also enable them to monitor and participate in any necessary justice.  Every case is a nuanced and unique situation that rigidity of laws continually struggles and fails to find fair solutions to. Instead, a community can manage these situations as a whole.

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to education?

Without access to quality education there is no question that people will fall behind and in doing so be subjected to the hardest of hardships of society and more than likely spend their entire lives in a constant state of struggle, anxiety, and probably fear.

Certainly, there are choices to be made along those paths, but the reality of the situation is that many of those choices are the choice between two ‘evils’ as often the quality of the choices presented to us are the ones we are capable of seeing and doing.

How many people may pass by a piece of wood and think nothing more of it, but an artist sees their next masterpiece?

The idea that education should vary in this day and age is borderline absurd. We have the capability to interact with the swath of human knowledge and experience at the literal touch of our fingertips. Organizing this into an education system that allows the repeated use of teaching materials, virtual environments that offer unparalleled exposure and experience, and an incentive system for great educators to create great content allows for the education of the people to be entirely driven by the collective effort of the group.

Schools can still be a place, but instead of the worker bee training, practical skills, worldly skills can be taught, learning to work socially can be fostered, and creativity encouraged. Learning simply begins in the classroom and can be continued outside with technology that inspires learning instead of agenda-ridden textbooks and curriculums designed by the latest flavor of the month.

This ability to explore taps into something that is fundamentally human. Our innate passion for exploration in all its facets - if fostered at the youngest of ages will only serve to inspire greater discoveries, grander creations, and more wonderful experiences.

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to expression?

Who are you? How often in your life have you had the chance to really explore such a question? Your precious hours of social time are probably spent exploring other endeavors and with the velocity of life how could you not? But what if the lion share of your time which you spend often doing things that don’t excite you around people who are not your family and friends (most of the time) didn’t have to exist?

What would it mean for an individual to be free from the burden of survival?

It will revolutionize the way society operates at an interpersonal level for one. The ability to not only know yourself but also be able to explore what enthralls you creates a more well rounded, open, curious, and aware individual. The effects of this cascade throughout life touching every aspect of a persons existence and by extension will touch every aspect of society.

If everyone’s basic needs are met imagine what it could do to the quality of life of people?

All of this combined into a quality of life would create something dramatically different than what we see today on a day to day basis. Instead of society being the obstacle to constantly overcome and battle in life society enables people to be able to tackle the obstacles and greater challenges facing us as a whole allowing us to not just survive, but thrive.

Structure

The structure in our community/cities comes from an era before the internet, before telephones, before the telegraph, it comes from a time where people wrote letters and carried them via foot/horseback.

We may have delayed our upgrade long enough.

A community needs to have a few basic tenets to function.

Of these 5 only being protected potentially needs a human ran agency.

Everyone has access to a device and these devices enable the individual to have a voice. When you combine this technology with a decentralized and immutable ledger (blockchain) it allows for a fully transparent system for a community to vote on any issue affecting them. It uses math to protect against fraud and brings balance to a system that has been grossly imbalanced since its inception.

These devices also can connect in real-time to learning environments in the real world or virtual through AR and VR. An interactive education to be had by all at any time.

In our increasingly digitized world the ability to work from nearly anywhere on the planet is becoming fast the norm. And the ability to work in areas that you are passionate about and not chasing a paycheck will enable a greater variety of opportunities for everyone.

Basic services are modularized and apart of the housing units which also modularly connect to a greater grid for a backup service, but all water and electricity would be generated on-site through a combination of harvesting technologies depending on the local environment.

Protection can be found in a number of ways, isolation can be protection, good relations could be protection, a police service can be protection. Enabling the community to guide themselves solves these nuanced questions (as well as many other nuanced questions) with an agile and free-flowing solution on a case by case basis.

But, “Who Pays for it all?”

One of the beautiful aspects of automation and where we are at technologically is that if you build something once properly not only can you utilize that over and over without the cost you also enable that process to be duplicated at almost no cost. Also upgrading these modular systems is a much smaller undertaking than the initial setup and a fraction of the cost of what it what take for a solution in today’s society as logistically it is much more simple.

After the initial cost to develop and deploy the technology the cost to maintain and grow the community becomes nearly the cost of the basic resources needed to run the community. Here traditional capitalism comes back into the picture, taxes would be dramatically less as the overhead to run the community is significantly less than your average community/city with the vast majority of your public services being automated/streamlined with technology.

Ultimately the people pay for it all, but that cost burden is significantly reduced, again allowing more resources to the individual, but now with a foundation to stand on apart from that. This allows for a much more robust economy as the people earning more disposable income will consume more meaning more growth for the community bringing more people, creating better quality lives, earning more disposable income, consuming more… ad infinitum

Conclusion

This is the basic overview of a very real and available solution to solve a swath of problems and challenges that are impacting our society.
