Spoiled Brats

Colossians 2:8-15

(The School of Athens by Raphael)

You are the spoils of the war of ideas

Someone has infiltrated the Colossian church with some enticing ideas … but where do they come from?

 Discovery Questions

Read Colossians 2:8-15, or the larger context. Which -isms do I buy into that are sourced in man’s rebellion against God?

With your family:

Get two cups of clean water. Label one of them “from the kitchen sink” (or “refrigerator” or other good source) and the other “from the toilet.” Talk about how they look the same and inviting when we’re thirsty, and if you didn’t know where they came from, you’d want to drink either one. Talk about how the source matters. Then talk about how it also matters where we get our ideas from.

With your small group:

  1. Read Colossians 2:8-15, or the larger context.
  2. What stands out to you in these verses? Why?
  3. What bothers you about these verses? Why?
  4. Discuss the self-reflection question above.
  5. How can we step out of our cultural lens to see the -isms more objectively?
  6. Given this passage, what should you do this week?

Next week, we continue our series in Colossians with vv. 2:16-19.
