ROB 498: Storytelling with Robotics

Project #2: Motorized Automata

DUE Friday 10/25/20223  

Objective

The purpose of this project is for students to learn hands-on skills and use a combination of simple machines and mechanics to create their own automata. Once the automata is made, students will then utilize motors to allow the final piece to move hands free for a short period of time. Students are encouraged to be creative and personalize their piece.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this project, you will learn:

• How to build objects using analog fabrication techniques
• Basics of building motorized kinetic mechanism
• Understand the basics of joinery and assembling of mixed media components

Project Requirements

• At least one element must be made by hand that isn't what we made in class
• Final project should have at least one movement
• Project should be motorized
• Final piece must function hands free for a minimum of 30 seconds
• Final piece should be completed within the given timeline (letter grade per lost per day missed)
• Base must be minimum of 8’x8’ maximum 10”x10”
