PSHE – YEAR 7

AUTUMN TERM

Throughout the term pupils will have the opportunity to develop the following skills:

  • recognise their own personal qualities
  • reflect on personal strengths
  • appreciate how other people see them
  • assertiveness skills
  • accessing help and support to support mental and emotional health
  • recognise what makes them feel good
  • assessment of own health profile
  • recognise ways to keep themselves safe
  • practising refusal skills

Drugs & Emotional Wellbeing – pupils will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge about:

  • the definition of the word ‘drug’
  • some of the risks involved with taking legal drugs
  • what influences their perception of drug use and how this can differ from reality
  • some key facts about young people’s drug use in the UK
  • different strengths of alcoholic drinks
  • how drinking to excess can affect the body
  • why people consume alcohol
  • the meaning of ‘being assertive’
  • the difference between being assertive and being aggressive
  • how mental and emotional health affect their ability to lead fulfilling lives
  • the help and support available when mental and emotional health is threatened

Healthy Lifestyle & Risk and Safety – pupils will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge about:

  • how an appropriate balance between work, leisure and exercise can promote health
  • how to make decisions that affect your health
  • choices you can make to keep healthy
  • what ‘risk’ can mean
  • positive and negative risks
  • different attitudes to risk
  • how to respond in risky situations
  • how good communication can help us reduce risks
  • refusal skills
  • how to prevent bullying from happening
  • the importance of speaking out against bullying

PSHE – YEAR 7

SPRING TERM

Throughout the term pupils will have the opportunity to develop the following skills:

  • Recognising their personal strength and how this affects their self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Building relationships
  • Practise the skills of communication and negotiation
  • Reflect on difference and what it means to individual people
  • Listening skills
  • Practise speaking and listening to others
  • Create steps to achieve goals
  • Turn steps into targets
  • How to set up a budget and cope with the unexpected

Identity & Communities – pupils will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge about:

  • Their identity and how it is affected by a range of factors, including a positive sense of self
  • Self-esteem and that it can change depending on personal circumstances
  • Different types of families
  • How family relationships affect our wellbeing
  • The roles and responsibilities of parents, carers and children in families
  • How relationship skills can be built
  • Being assertive
  • How prejudice might be challenged
  • The multiple roles and responsibilities in society
  • Why positive relationships are helpful when working in groups

Planning for the future – pupils will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge about:

  • The positive things they want to achieve in the future
  • Managing their money and savings
  • The role of banks and building societies

PSHE – YEAR 7

SUMMER TERM

Throughout the term pupils will have the opportunity to develop the following skills:

  • Organising and speaking in a mock general election
  • Reflect upon British Values in the UK and how they impact upon life
  • Various strategies for coping with these changes and mood swings

Democracy & Law – pupils will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge about:

  • the 3 parts which make up Parliament: the House of Commons, House of Lords, the Monarch
  • what happens in Parliament and what each of the 3 parts is responsible for
  • the differences in the role of Parliament and the role of the government
  • what  a general election is and how it works
  • how people vote in a general election and what happens afterwards
  • some of the key terms associated with general elections and voting
  • the importance of having laws.
  • why laws are made.
  • the role Parliament plays in passing new laws.
  • the role of the Police in our communities
  • why British Values are important to us

Puberty & Hygiene – pupils will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge about:

  • the emotional and physical changes during puberty
  • the importance of personal hygiene
  • ways of maintaining personal hygiene
  • about whether boys and girls receive equal respect
  • about a range of situations related to gender and stereotypes
  • that friendships affect everything we do
  • that positive friendships are important in our lives
  • that friendships can cause strong feelings and emotions
  • how relationships change as we get older
