Couch Oil Cares Scholarship


awarded to six (6) individuals across a 16-county area who plan to attend a four-year or community college (first-year students only).

Again this year, in partnership with the Durham Bulls, Couch Oil Company of Durham is pleased to offer the Couch Oil Cares Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is available to individuals who have been: ~accepted into either a four-year or community college

Requirements are as follows:

 ●        Applicant must be in the top 25 % of the senior class

        Transcript with first semester grades, test scores, and class rank (Unofficial transcript is fine due to current limitations)

        Essay must be written without assistance and accompanied by verification that the essay was begun /completed in the presence of a teacher or parent/guardian.

        Letter to Gamma Lambda indicating goals, career plans, & reasons for applying

        Information on school and community activities

        2 letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a teacher who has     taught the applicant





Graduating senior from a Wake County High School accepted to and attending WSSU who meets/provides the following: 

~Minimum 2.7 grade point average (GPA)  Official high school transcript (sealed)  

~Score of at least 850 (SAT), or 18 Composite (ACT), submit a copy of the score with application  

~Two (2) sealed letters of recommendation: 1 from a school official (principal/teacher/counselor, etc.); 1 from an adult not a relative (pastor/other church official, employer, etc.)  

~Personal Statement: On a single separate page, briefly state what influenced your decision to choose WSSU as your institution of higher education, and how you will contribute to the university as a student. If typed, please double space in font size no smaller than 10.

NCHSAA Lacrosse Scholarship

The NCHSAA awards two $500 scholarships (one male and one female) to senior varsity lacrosse players at an NCHSAA member high school who have been accepted to play lacrosse on the varsity collegiate level of an NCAA or NAIA program.


Tony Cullen Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is given in memory of former player, coach, and official, Tony Cullen. Tony Cullen played and coached lacrosse at Duke University in the 80’s, and later became an official in the early 90’s.  The NCHSAA awards two $1,000 scholarships (one male and one female) to senior varsity lacrosse players at an NCHSAA member high school who have been accepted to play lacrosse on the varsity collegiate level of an NCAA or NAIA program.

 Consideration is given to the following verifiable & documented criteria:

- GPA and Class Rank.

- Quality of reference letters.

- GPA and Class Rank.

- Examples of applicant’s ways of giving back to lacrosse besides playing the game.

- Leadership qualities with examples applicable to the applicant's team and as an individual.

- Examples of sportsmanship as a player and integrity as a person
