Club Purpose:

Black Student Union is a team of passionate Black/African American individuals  who like to discuss the issues that minority races on Mercer Island experience on a day to day basis. As well as considering our differences, we discuss similarities by having group discussions on current events. We try to mentor each other by making sure that students are getting help in classes that they are struggling in, in order for them to succeed in the upcoming years. Black Student Union also has the opportunity to contract the Martin Luther King Assembly as well as Black History Month.

Club Purpose:

The Civics club is a club that educates students about the rights and duties of a US citizen, how to use those rights and duties to make a difference in the community, and create and participate in projects that benefit the community. This is a student lead club that advocates for change through both civil and non-civil means within the guidelines of US laws.

MI Computational Linguistics club's goal is to promote student learning in the fields of linguistics, science, technology, engineering and mathematics through hands-on team projects and collaboration with adult mentors who have industry experience. The club will strive towards bringing awareness to origins and structural aspects of world languages as well as improve proficiency among students in Natural language Processing (NLP) for translations across languages.

Club Purpose:

This club is to help students with learning challenges or 504/IEP plans. I want to remove any stigma towards learning challenges. I'd want to bring in counselors to talk about 504/IEP plans, put up posters around the school to show equality vs equity and host a night called "Walking in their Shoes" which simulates what it's like to have learning challenges for students or parents who don't understand the challenges we have to face.

Education Coalition for Asian Representation (ECAAR)

Club Purpose:

ECAAR’s goal is to ensure the inclusion of essential Asian and Asian American history in the United States’ education curriculum. In this club all participants will complete assignments that benefit the ultimate goals of this club. Current goals include: running monthly presentations in spring of 2022, working on projects with local AAPI organizations, running a successful fundraiser, creating instagraphics, etc. Some tasks would include: research on major Asian American historical events, research on legislature, compiling resources, creating social media content, etc.


Engineering Club

MIHS Engineering club aims to provide a space for people who both enjoy engineering as a hobby, and are interested in engineering as a possible career choice. Various tools are available to club members, so whether or not you are interested in 3D printing objects, making computer models, or learning about how the country was built through civil engineering, there is something for everyone. Club Purpose:

For the school year of 2021-2022, MIHS HOSA has agreed to include specific support relating to our upcoming competitions and events held during the school year. We are planning to provide study suggestions, form study groups based on subjects, welcome mentors to guide members through their process of studying for their exams, and hopefully mock competitions along with feedback forms. Other than focusing on the competitions in March, we are planning to organize interactive activities during club meetings before and after the competitions, as well as some CPR classes that will be led by certified CPR instructors, volunteering opportunities, and field trips (such as touring UW Medical School or a Science Lab).

Club Purpose:

Interact Club is a volunteer club part of the International Rotary organization that gives members many different opportunities to volunteer and help out the community. We work with the MI half marathon, Food Lifeline, Northwest Harvest, and more. The MIHS Interact club meets every Monday after school from 3:00 - 3:15. Our club has a small time commitment to meet, which means it’s easy to get to all your other activities and sports in the day and can work to be flexible with your other responsibilities. Students can either sign up for volunteering projects during the meeting or on Facebook posts in the group! It’s a relaxed group of people and a fun club, making it a great way to build connections with others across our community.

The goal of this club is to create a fun and welcoming environment to students from all backgrounds and cultures. We also want to create awareness about the ongoing antisemitism in the world. JSU meets during lunch with food provided that is free to everyone. Students will play fun and interactive games that include raffles monthly, such as AirPods, $100 gift cards, and more. Students will also be able to learn about Jewish culture and heritage.


Journalism Club

Club Purpose:

Journalism club is great for students interested in writing, journalism, current events, or being involved in the MIHS Islander. It gives students the opportunity to write articles, learn about journalism, and discuss the news without being in the journalism class.

Membership is flexible, and this club is what you make of it. You are encouraged to come to as many or as few meetings as you would like. If you are particularly passionate about something involving our community or have an idea of an article you would like to write, you can come to a meeting and we can help you make that happen. This club is meant to be flexible and serve its members.


K-Pop Dance Club

Club Purpose:

Mock Trial is a stimulation of a court case in which students play lawyers, witnesses, and bailiffs. Throughout the year students prepare their roles to participate in the county wide YMCA Mock Trial Tournament.

Club Purpose:

MIHS MUN discusses and debates current events, international politics, and global affairs in preparation for official Model UN conferences where students represent a nation in a mock meeting.  All experience levels are welcome, and we practice in a relaxed environment for everyone to learn.

Some activities for this club may be discussing motorsport racing, what it's about and how to get involved. Another activity could be talking about the different parts of a motor, how it works and how to assemble certain parts of it. A goal of this club would be to have an environment where students can talk about cars, motorcycles and other things as well as meet other students with those same interests.

The QSA’s goals are to provide a safe sanctuary for the Queer students of MIHS where they can be accepted and be their true self. Straight allies are also welcome. If I could list any activities, they would all be gauged with raising awareness about the LGBT community in MIHS.


Radio Broadcasting Club

Club Purpose:

The goal of Radio Club is to give students who are not enrolled in the radio program to be still part of our amazing staff. Some students don't have the class space to join radio class and that's why this club was made years ago to support those students. We also use our club to promote the program at club events to keep new students coming to our program.


Red Cross Club

Club Purpose:

Red Cross Club organizes and carries out at least three service projects each year.Service projects range from blood drives to fundraisers to holiday card-writing to veterans. We are affiliated with the American Red Cross, and all club members become registered Red Cross volunteers.


Refugee Awareness Club

Club Purpose:

We will recruit high school volunteers to teach refugee kids STEM subjects through this club. In the meetings we will discuss and plan activities and lesson plans for the refugee children. The goal of this club is to bring awareness to the refugee crisis and the unique struggles that refugee children face, as well as help serve refugees in need.

We learn engineering and business tactics so we can apply them later in the year - by building a 120 pound robot that competes in worldwide competitions!

Club Purpose:

SAFE club is dedicated towards promoting safe driving and refraining from the use of drugs and alcohol. Every year we have a couple of lunch booths that read “Donut drink and drive” or “say no to vaping” etc. We usually have a bag of candy or incentives that are given out to anyone who signs a petition to agree to not drive under the influence or not use any drugs etc. We also hand out a flyer every year that has information about the dangers of driving intoxicated and we advertise safe rides. Our goals are to communicate the dangers of using these substances and driving under the influence. Teens are 3 times more likely to crash than adult drivers and alcohol/drugs are a huge contributor. Finally, at the end of the year we usually try and attend a club conference with clubs from around Washington with the same overall goal. At this conference we present what our school has done to promote these values and what we plan for the next year.

Club Purpose:

The major focus of Science Club is to compete in the Science Olympiad Competition. This competition is like an academic track meet, consisting of a series of 23 team events that test on a variety of subjects such as genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, geology, technology and more. Science Club will also offer a variety of fun experiments on a monthly basis. It gives students a unique opportunity to learn more about and explore STEM stopic not taught in the typical school curriculum.

The purpose of the Science National Honor Society is to encourage and recognize scientific and intellectual thought. We communicate and engage with the scientific community by bringing together students and professionals in STEM fields and by providing opportunities for volunteering and community engagement. Our club chapters are nationwide and recognized as an esteemed organization focused on the sciences which successfully promotes it entirely on the high school level.

The MIHS Speech & Debate Team is a welcoming and supportive community aimed at empowering students through communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creative skills. We compete both locally and nationally- in the 2020-2021 year, team members won a State Champion, State Runner-Up, and made top 36 in the nation, among other recognition. Debate practice on Tuesdays and Speech practice Thursdays!

Throughout the year, we will focus on teaching the sport of rugby/touch rugby to members along with helping them develop the necessary skills to play. The reason for starting as a touch rugby club is to make it easier for teaching skills, making sure players become more comfortable with contact, and help with the transition into the actual sport of rugby later. The club's goal by the end of the year would be to enter in at least one touch tournament with some other clubs around the Seattle area. The main goal of the club is to spread awareness of rugby to Mercer Island and other communities.

We are an ultimate frisbee team that plays other clubs around the area of Lake Washington, and practices at Aubrey-Davis Park. This gives people who want to play ultimate frisbee a chance to play and get a sport credit.

Club Purpose:

At the MIHS Trivia Club, we play fun games such as Jeopardy, Family Feud, Deal or No Deal, and many others! We learn general knowledge and have days where we do questions based on more specific topics so that it’s a fun and beneficial experience! The Trivia Club has a fun and welcoming environment, with very entertaining surprises and ways to spice up our games. We meet on a Thursday of the month at 3:05pm (specified on our Facebook and Instagram), and will have prizes at meetings, see you there!


UNICEF Club

Club Purpose:

Unicef club is a club that meets once a month on a Thursday in room 211B. In meetings, we typically will discuss and spread awareness about issues children face around the world. Similarly, we will have conversations about issues MIHS students face and how we can improve them. In our meetings, we will often have guest speakers and curriculums from UNICEF itself. This club is officially through the UNICEF organization and we will be helping raise funds for them throughout the year.

Women’s empowerment club strives to not only create a safe community but also raise awareness through volunteering with a focus on empowering women, specifically (but not limited to) education and youth mentorship. Additionally, further educating and raising awareness on gender inequality and intersectionality through lectures, films, and guest speakers. Meetings will be held on the first and third Tuesday of every month in Room 411.

Writing Club is a place where writers and creators of all kinds can work together to tell stories. We meet in Room 208 every Thursday from 3:15 to 4:15. All skill and experience levels welcome!


Young Americans for Freedom (YAF)

YAF aims to be a place where ideas from all parts of the political spectrum can be shared. It’s a traditionally conservative organization that works to bring conservatives together and to further these ideals. YAF will meet weekly (as of now) and be a safe place to discuss politics, as well as host speakers, go to conferences, and participate in volunteer activities.
