Dear Seckman Families:

SHS is excited to welcome our students back to the 22-23 school year.  School starts Wednesday, August 24th, and there is quite a bit to consider between now and then. Check out the information below to prepare for the upcoming school year:

Freshman Welcome Back:  We will host our Freshman Welcome Back on August 17th from 4pm - 8pm.   Freshman students will participate in orientation activities including a mini-schedule at that time.  This event is for students only.  Unfortunately, we are not able to provide transportation, so students will need to plan to be dropped off and picked up.  Specific information will be emailed directly to freshman families.

Upperclassmen Orientations:  Students will be able to walk the building at their leisure to locate classrooms and learn how to navigate the halls.  Secretaries will be available to issue lockers and parking permits.  More information is below.

             Seniors    8:00 A.M. -10:00 A.M.

Juniors  10:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.

Sophomores 1:00 P.M.-3:00 P.M.

Student Schedules

Student schedules will be available on Tyler Monday, August 15th at 5PM.

Schedule changes: Incomplete schedules will be corrected automatically by the start of school. Students may request a schedule change beginning August 15.  Students must submit the online Schedule Change Request Form no later than the August 26 deadline.  Requests must be approved by the grade-level team.

Schedule changes will be permitted ONLY if one of these five criteria are met:

We do not make schedule changes as a matter of convenience. For example:

***IF DROPPING BAND OR CHOIR YOU WILL NEED A SIGNATURE FROM THE TEACHER ON THE BAND/CHOIR COURSE DROP FORM*** See your choir/band teacher for the form.

Student Lockers

Students will be assigned lockers during our orientation day on August 17. Students unable to attend on the 17th can get their lockers the first few days of school.  There is no cost for using a locker and students are not required to have a locker.   Students CANNOT share lockers, nor should student’s share locker combinations.  We cannot hold lockers; if you want a locker by a friend, be sure to join in the line together.

Student Parking

Students must have a parking permit to drive to school.  Only Seniors and Juniors will be able to park on campus to begin the school year.  We may be able to open parking to sophomores later in the school year if space permits.  The upperlot is for seniors only and reserved spots for student leadership.  Junior students must park on the lower lot.  You cannot drive until the parking tag is displayed on your mirror.  The cost for a parking tag is $40.  Below is the process to obtain a parking tag:

  1. Fill-out the Google “Driving Agreement” form and upload necessary documents
  2. Bring payment to school to receive the hang tag.  You cannot drive until you have a tag.

Once you have registered online, you will receive an appointment time to report to school to get the hang tag.  We will only distribute tags at the assigned time.

  1. Questions regarding parking can be directed to Mr. Daniel Bieser
  2. All previous debts must be resolved, and vaccinations up to date PRIOR to receiving your parking permit.

1:1 Chromebook Distribution

Seckman High School is a 1:1 Chromebook school and students are expected to have a Chromebook every day at school to access learning materials.  If you haven’t yet, please charge your Chromebook, right away, before the start of school.

All students will be issued a district-provided Chromebook if they don’t have one already. Chromebooks will be distributed from the library during the first days of school. Individual student accounts will be charged a $25 non-refundable fee to protect against damages. Parents may choose to opt out of the fee by contacting the grade-level secretary. The cost to replace a lost or broken Chromebook is $250.

 School Pictures

School Pictures will be taken on the first day of school for ALL underclassmen. Inter-state Portrait Studios is the official provider of school photos for Seckman.  Picture packages can be purchased through Inter-State.  School pictures are needed for the school ID and yearbook.  Order forms and more information will come directly from Inter-state Portrait Studio via email. Not getting the emails from Inter-State? click here.

Yearbook photos are subject to the school dress code. Click here to learn more.

School Supplies

Missouri’s Tax Free Weekend begins Aug 5, 2022.  Remember, Chromebooks will be provided to students grades 9-12.  Because we offer 200+ different courses, it is difficult to narrow-down supply lists. Individual teachers may request various items, but general items that may be helpful include: personal whiteboard, whiteboard markers, colored pencils, pens and pencils, paper, and any items that benefit your own personal organization preferences.

If you planned on taking an art class: Sharpies- fine and extra fine, Scissors, Glue, Crayons, Markers, A sketchbook, Colored pencils, Masking tape, Ruler, Oil Pastels (optional).

It is necessary that families update their student records each year.  Please log into Tyler and choose the highlighted box labeled “Online Registration Must Be Completed” and complete and/or renew each form listed.

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH - These forms need to be completed each year also.  Every family is encouraged to complete this form regardless of income levels.  Eligible students can earn: Two free ACT tests. Qualify for several local, state, and federal scholarships.  You can get this year’s application electronically through the parent portal. Families will also need to reapply after July 1 for the 2022-2023 school year.  Families can complete an electronic free and reduced meal application through the Parent Portal either on a computer or through the Tyler Student 360 mobile application.

Updates to the SHS Code of Conduct

In an effort to improve the learning environment at Seckman High School, we have updated several of our behavior expectations.  We wanted to take a moment to update our families on our revised expectations.  The biggest adjustment for our students will be adapting to our electronic device policy.  High School students will only be able to use personal devices before school, after school, and during their 25-minute lunch block. Parents and students must become accustomed to communicating with students via email through school issued Chromebooks or by calling the main office in the event of an emergency.

Additionally, we will be able to provide more safety and security through improved drug and vape policies, and we will be more closely implementing and monitoring our dress code expectations.  Students are prohibited from wearing hats, head coverings, crop tops among other inappropriate items.

Read more about the policy changes by clicking here, or access our full school handbook on our website.

ACT September Registration Deadline

Students, don’t forget that the September 10, 2022 ACT Exam registration deadline is August 5.   Click here for more information.

Did you know that SHS offers a class that prepares students for the ACT?  Checkout our ACT timeline below:

> My child is entering the 9th grade: don’t worry about the ACT yet… let them adjust to high school and recommend courses that challenge your student, but don’t overwhelm them.

> My child is entering the 10th grade: Start getting ready for the ACT! Seckman High School offers an ACT prep course! If your child is college-bound, they should take ACT Prep second semester of their sophomore year or either semester of their junior year.

> My child is entering the 11th grade: Have them take the ACT several times (at least 2-3) during their junior year. If they are weak in a certain area(s), the ACT Prep class can help with this.

> My child is entering the 12th grade: They are running out of time! They can only take the September and October ACT test before their college applications will be due in December.

> Don’t wait until it’s too late! And don’t prioritize extra curricular activities over preparing for the ACT. This creates more stress on your student.
