LWVSJ Observer Corps* Notes: SJI School Board, May 31, 2023
Lauren Wall, an elementary school parent, made public comment about the benefits of a structured literacy program.
Noel Harley was recognized on retiring from the elementary school after teaching there for 21.8 years. Shannon Plummer was recognized for his work for the district since 1996.
Rod Turnbull, Principal of the Friday Harbor Middle School, along with 5 students presented the student showcase on individual determination toward graduating from high school and future educational direction. ASB representative Aaron Orozco reported that the last two weeks had been busy ones with finals, final projects, and graduation logistics for seniors.
Superintendent Fred Woods reported that Graduation is next week. The middle school sprinkler upgrade is moving forward with a better bid estimate and may be completed over the summer.
The District Strategic Plan focuses on growing art technology; using the 3D printer and digital photography will be added next year. It expands trades programs and connecting with local experts from our community to increase exposure & experience in multiple areas post school employment. The plan touches on art, computer programming, coding, health care, and early education.
The nurse reported that Covid continued over the school year with 304 tests done within all schools. She screened all K-5 students screened for hearing issues and provided Narcan training. She is coordinating next fall’s immunization requirements with the county health department.
Staff is working on the preliminary budget for 23-24. Enrollment in all schools for 2023-24 should be similar to this year. The recent three-year teacher contract has made budgeting more accurate. The recent legislative session provided little relief for the district’s fiscal challenges.
The School Board passed a resolution drafted in an earlier special meeting regarding Washington State School Directors Association’s (WSSDA) Amply Funded Staffing Levels Position Revision.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan organization encourages informed participation in government. The Observer Corps attends and takes notes at government meetings to expand public understanding of public policy and decisions.
