Overview

Our chapter needs strong leadership in order to thrive and the chapter board needs you!

Officers and committee members are expected to meet monthly or as needed to achieve chapter goals. Officers will need to be able to meet virtually (via Zoom) and access online chapter records (Google Drive). Officers are expected to represent the chapter publicly and ethically.

Officer selection process

The chapter process entails* the following:

  1. Complete the Officer & Committee Chair Interest Form 
  1. This short form should take less than 10 minutes to complete
  1. Potential board members are invited to attend an upcoming open board meetings
  1. Chapter board meetings are held the second Thursday of the month starting at 6 p.m. on Zoom.
  2. Remaining meeting dates for 2025: August 14, September 11, October 9, and November 13.
  3. You must complete the Officer & Committee Chair Interest Form to receive the Chapter Board Meeting Zoom link.
  1. Interested candidates will work with members of the board to discuss best fit and identify appropriate roles for applicants
  1. If there are multiple applicants for a position, additional information may be requested (written or verbal interview)
  1. Board will present final nominations for chapter members to vote on
  2. After members vote to confirm officer nominations, officers will serve two year terms starting January 2026.

Position and duties

Positions responsibilities are subject to change as chapter needs change. Additionally, we encourage those serving in an officer or chair position to influence the role to reflect their skills, abilities, and interests. In general, board responsibility includes:

Position

Responsibilities

President

  • Oversee chapter & board meetings
  • Oversee chapter budget, communications, and activities in conjunction with board members
  • Support board members in completing their tasks
  • Represent the chapter in community and business partnerships

Vice President

  • Support the president and board members in fulfilling their duties
  • Step in for the president in their absence

Secretary

  • Maintain chapter records including meeting minutes
  • Work with the chapter board to ensure records are documented and disseminated appropriately (via Google Drive, newsletter, website, social media, etc.)

Treasurer

  • Maintain the chapter’s financial records and ensure good stewardship of chapter funds
  • Coordinate with statewide treasure committee and adhere to SCNPS bookkeeping practices
  • Give regular financial updates to chapter board

Communication Chair

  • Oversee chapter communication and publicity efforts including monthly newsletter, social media content, and website.
  • Ensure chapter communications adhere to brand standards and grammar/editorial guidelines.
  • Work with traditional media outlets to promote chapter activities and initiatives.
  • Coordinate with the statewide communications group.
  • Oversee any social media coordinators or other communications committee volunteers.

Membership Chair

  • Maintain member roster in conjunction with the State Membership Chair
  • Spearhead annual membership renewal efforts
  • Engage with new members and foster chapter volunteerism and leadership

Plant Sale Chair

  • Coordinates spring and fall native plant sales
  • Liaisons with vendors, secures necessary permits and permissions, organizes volunteers
  • Works with board to promote event (Communication Chair) and recruit volunteers

Stewardship Chair

  • Lead stewardship activities, such as invasive species removals, native plant restoration and monitoring, and community garden projects / maintenance
  • Coordinate volunteer workdays and planting efforts, communicates regularly with Stewardship volunteers

Speaker and Field Trip Chair

  • Coordinate field trips, chapter meeting speakers, and seminar speakers
  • Manage field trip logistics (safety, speakers, access, registration) in person and via Neon software

Education and Outreach Chair

  • Maintain and update educational materials as needed
  • Coordinate outreach events, such as invited presentations and exhibitor tabling
  • Maintain a list of tabling volunteers; train volunteers to independently host table
  • Lead targeted education initiatives as needed

Member at large

  • Assist board members with tasks
  • Lead special initiatives and projects as needed
