Criteria for ELD Community Member/Parent for Multilingual Learners of the Year Award

Outstanding Community Service

Any community/school/parent members can nominate a parent or community member for this award. The award is given annually to community members or parents who go above and beyond to provide multilingual learners and their families with access and opportunities to effectively navigate the school system and engage with the larger community, especially during COVID-19 distance learning and virtual instruction.

Nomination window opens April 16th, 2021. Due May 14th, 2021.

Rules

The application must include at least 3 criteria: One criterion from Outstanding Community Services to Multilingual Learners (MLs), at least one criterion from Leadership Qualities to Support MLs in the Community, and at least one criterion from Sustaining Educational Perseverance.  

Outstanding Community Service to MLs and Families

Parents or community members that have elevated valuing language and culture as an asset for multilinguals and their families, as evidenced by:

  • High Motivation & Initiative: Consistently plans activities using innovative approaches to meet the needs of the diverse student and parent community.
  • Integrity: Consistently demonstrates a genuine passion in carrying out activities that make a difference for ELs/MLLs and their families in the community.  
  • Commitment: Demonstrates a willingness to consistently go above beyond the call of duty to accomplish community service goals.

Leadership Qualities to Support MLs in the Community

Parents and community members teachers that have positively impacted access and opportunities for the multilinguals that they serve, as evidenced by:

  • Promotes culturally responsive approaches and multicultural understanding of ELs/MLLs in the school community in Montgomery County
  • Inspires student participation in community services and activities that earn Student Service Learning Hours.
  • Provides student training and coordination for community activities.
  • Provides parent training and resources to parents of MLs to ensure equal access and opportunities to programs and services to enhance the education of MLs.

Sustaining Educational Perseverance

Parents and community members that have positively impacted access and opportunities for the multilinguals (MLs) that they serve, as evidenced by:

  • Provides extensive academic and other tutoring support to ELs or MLs.
  • Provides outstanding extracurricular activities and support to ELs or MLs at the school or district level.
