Day B

myths have become a substitute for the search for meaning which other generations sought in more expansive and significant ways...Many of us feel a sense of dissatisfaction, a void that the myths of the image culture and the material goods they sell do little to fill...they also represent a gigantic "red herring," a signpost to an empty journey, a joust with the windmills of our culture, leaving us like confused Don Quixote's looking for a real opponent.”(Davis)

What are some myths of our time?

Discuss article: Are these “myths” from the 1990s still alive today? In small groups discuss the ads that you found that indicate a “Myth of our Time”? Consider the following questions and be prepared to present your most evocative ad to the whole class:

  • Who created the ad.?
  • What is the intent?
  • What is the fallacy?
  • How does the fallacy influence the audience?
  • Who is the intended audience?
  • Who funded it?

  • How would you classify your ad? What topic or myth does it address?
  • Does the advertisement challenge or reflect mainstream society’s views? Is this an area where change needs to happen?
  • present as possible research topics
  • Remember the questions you asked yesterday about your “myth”

Final Project: Creating an advertising pitch

You will be working in groups of 3-4 creating a presentation that pitches a new advertisement campaign taking your “product” in a much needed new direction to promote positive social change. Consider the following: Has society evolved? How does the media challenge or reinforce outdated ideas?

Ultimately, your campaign will take a stand about an ideology held by our society on a specific issue (gender roles, national identity, tolerance, politics, home life, work place, power structures, etc.) that you feel is outdated, the problems/challenges these views create, and the influence of the media on society’s change or lack of change regarding this issue.

You will need to do the following:

  • Pick a research topic and create a research question to guide your learning on your topic. Use the Research Question Generator Doc to aid you in developing a question.

  • Consider the mainstream approach to your product. How does that approach influence the target audience? What needs to change? What efforts have been made to create change? What still needs to happen?

  • You will need to annotate 3-6 (2 per group member, or 3 if solo) articles on your topic to ground your understanding of the issue. In addition, you will need 4-6 images used by the media (all properly cited at the end of your presentation) and 1-2 images created by your group to launch your new campaign.

Progress Reports

Reinforce that research from academic journals, periodicals and credible websites will drive the formation of your ideas.  Images will ultimately reinforce this evidence.

Break into small groups to begin formulating research question and looking for resources (teacher(s) will stop in to monitor progress and help troubleshoot)

Digital  bulletin board for topics

Question Generator Activity

Creating a research question: What is the issue you want to address? To what extent would it be possible__________, given that_________? How do you see the change?

Search for and close read articles and images to create strong analysis.  How will you use the evidence in your articles to prove your thesis? How do your images support the evidence in your articles? Do you need more evidence?

Teacher(s) will circulate: Research question feedback

Work on articles and information (6 per group by Friday)

Continue to close read articles and images to create strong analysis.  How will you use the evidence in your articles to address your question? How do your images support the evidence in your articles? Do you need more evidence?
