This personal plan reviews last years' goals, evaluates my grid placement and possible long-term grid progression, and sets short-term goals for the coming year.
The chart below was included in last year’s Personal Plan. Ranking is as follows:

Installation procedures and source code control required more of my time than I was hoping it would. Because Clyde was assigned to the FDR project, I had to upgrade the installation procedures for Geneva 3.2. This should be less of a problem now that Spiros is trained. I believe he can competently take over this task from me with my supervision.
Construction did not require enough of my time. This is because we did not develop any new modules for 3.2. I was able to perform maintenance but did not get to do any new development. I believe my technical skills will improve more rapidly if I can perform more new system development.
Current Evaluation Currently I am evaluated as follows:
I | II | III | IV | V | VI | |
IT | X | |||||
CI | ||||||
Industry | ||||||
Business Process | (X)* | |||||
Project Management | ||||||
Practice Building |
* Although this rating has no impact on my overall rating, I think my audit experience was overlooked in evaluating this category. I have not had any opportunity to demonstrate these skills in our group. I believe I should be listed at a minimum as a I, and potentially as a II based upon some of the consulting related assignments I had in auditing.
Long-term Possible Positions In the long-term, (3 - 5 years) I believe I could be rated at the following level in any one category (not all categories simultaneously). In other words, if I concentrated exclusively on a particular category, I could achieve the ranking in the category at the exclusion of other categories. Each area is analyzed below:
I | II | III | IV | V | VI | |
IT | X | |||||
CI | ||||||
Industry | ||||||
Business Process | X | |||||
Project Management | X | |||||
Practice Building | X |
IT I need to advance to at least a IV in the next three to five years. To do that, I must continue to improve my foundation skills, if for no other reason than to improve my confidence in my IT skills. I am not philosophically committed to the MVS platform in the long-term, but recognize our group’s strategic position in this market.
I do not sense my strength to be in major module development or MVS internals. I believe Mark Ashton and Randy Ness adequately back up Doug in this area. I am committed to understanding MVS and IT related issues to provide a foundation for additional responsibilities.
I believe I have a stronger ability to understand process relationships. In other words, my greatest strength for the group currently is my understanding of all of the components of GENEVA and how they interact, not necessarily a complete understanding of the module structures. I would like to continue to develop this skill, and apply it to more situations than just Geneva.
BP I believe I have the ability, education, and audit experience to pursue Business Process analysis. However, I am not interested in the core subject of Financial and Cost Management (FCM) or Supply Chain Management (SCM).
My understanding of this area is important because I have the ability to interact with clients, to gather and organize facts, and to make recommendations consistent with Business Process analysis. I am interested in using these skills to assist in developing IT recommendations.
PM I believe I can develop the ability to manage projects effectively. I also believe that once I have developed a better foundation of IT skills, project management will be my major strength. I may ultimately be better at project management than IT, but probably not within 5 years.
I believe I have performed project management functions during 3.1 development. That experience was somewhat stressful because I did not have any organization authority, nor self confidence. I am interested in receiving greater project management responsibility and assignments consistent with my ability. I also believe I carry out certain project management tasks currently, such as organizing work flows, defining requirements, supervising staff and managing development processes.
PB Although I believe I have the skills to perform well in both the CE-Methodology and People Development aspects of Practice Building, I am not currently interested in pursing these options.
My short-term goals for the following year are as follows:
Manage the Geneva Development Center. I would like to assume many of the tasks that Randy has responsibility for relative to the office in Sacramento. I believe this will allow Randy to concentrate on program development and give me project management experience. I hope this includes day to day management of the Advantis DA/CR project.
Train Spiros and Rob to replace Randy and Kip. If I perform the above task correctly, by next year I can turn many of the functions Randy and I have been performing over to Spiros and Rob. Some travel may help in this training, enabling them to learn my job by doing. I was pleased with their performance while I was absent the end of May.
Increase my client interaction and basic IT assignments. I am no longer teaching the youth class for my church. This allows me to travel if required to perform client assignments that increase my IT understanding and improve my client management skills. I hope to purse assignments that build my confidence in my IT and client management skills.
I did not adequately monitor my CE for the current year and am having to ‘cramp’ it in at the last moment. Next year, I would like to take the following CE classes.
Assembler. I would like to be able to write assembler programs. I realize I will probably not be asked to create large assembler modules. However, I believe understanding Assembler helps to better understand the core of MVS computing. This may be achieved through self study.
Mitis II, Design. I would like to take the design course some time this summer. Although I have strong experience in some aspects of design, I am unfamiliar with others
At the end of the year or early next year I would like to take the Project Management course. This course would prepare me to achieve a level III Project Management rating.
The following is a listing of the major activities performed during the year. The results of this list are presented in the 1995 Activities table above. This list is for information only.
