The ComCult Weekly

November 23, 2020

Volume 2, Number 12

I leant upon a coppice gate

When Frost was spectre-gray,

And Winter’s dregs made desolate

The weakening eye of day.

The tangled bine-stems scored the sky

Like strings of broken lyres,

And all mankind that haunted nigh

Had sought their household fires.

Call for Papers/Call for Submissions

The Continuist | Deadline Nov 25

Hey Communication and Culture student!

Calling for submissions for our second zine publication of the year: HALL OF MIRRORS!

Trapped in a confined space, forced to confront images or versions of ourselves that are warped, twisted, and stretched beyond our recognition - this past year has often felt as strange as a summer fair funhouse, where reality is suspended and the only thing to do is move forward. With that in mind, we want to give artists a space in which they can feel free to go out of their comfort zones. Let loose, experiment with your art form, and dig into the recesses of your psyche as we near the end of this year - whatever you create, we want to hear from you!

The main theme of this zine is reflection, which can encompass a whole lot of things relating to your experience of the past year. Need some prompts to get those creative juices pumping? Check out some of the themes below, and see if they call to you!

  • Self-image: How do you see yourself now, as opposed to how you saw yourself before 2020? Fractured, or whole? What image do you have of yourself, in terms of physical appearance, spiritual/emotional growth, and/or state of mind?
  • Technology in 2020: Technology has taken over so many aspects of our lives and experiences. We're constantly looking at the world through our screens, through social media, through the news -  sometimes warped versions of the truth. We're constantly looking at literal reflections of ourselves during Zoom calls. How has this affected you?
  • The past: Nostalgia for better times, the sense that childhood is repeating itself in quarantine, etc.
  • The present: Reflections on life in quarantine and the strange unreality we've all been forced to live in, the turbulent political climate, personal mental health, etc.
  • The future: Looking to a world beyond 2020 - whether that future is bleak or hopeful, etc.

Note that your piece does not necessarily have to explicitly address or reference the real-life events of 2020. It's more about the mood of your piece, and how it reflects some aspect of the myriad of emotions we've experienced over the past year. If your piece is a fictional short story that has nothing to do with reality, that's totally fine! We don't want to limit your creativity in any way :)

Submit your art to thecontinuist@gmail.com by Wednesday, November 25th, 2020. The Hall of Mirrors awaits!

YSGS graduate student mental health and wellness survey

YSGS will be conducting an online survey to explore the mental health and well-being of current graduate students, in order to better understand their current experiences and to identify areas where students are flourishing as well as areas where they may be struggling.

This project builds on work initially done by two psychology PhD students in spring 2020, exploring the mental health and well-being of a current cohort of psychology graduate students. This initial work was presented to the Faculty Associate Deans, and there was consensus that this kind of information would be important to have, across all our Faculties and graduate programs. YSGS and the Associate Deans of the Faculties have been involved in vetting and reviewing the project and the specific survey questions.

The project has also undergone Ryerson Research Ethics Board review and approval (REB 2020-398).

The landing page to access the survey can be found here.
