                        The process of selecting and enrolling in specific courses is required of each student yearly -- soon after the beginning of the second semester.  Many of the items found in this booklet will form a basis upon which the scheduling process can be accomplished more beneficially.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT – 4 credits required for graduation (1 credit at each level)

209 English 9

1 Credit - Two Semesters

English 9 is devoted to practicing skills necessary for clear and effective communication: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will read specified short stories, drama, novel and nonfiction. Students will write to improve development of ideas and unity and coherence of expression. Speaking and listening skills will be practiced through both formal and informal oral assignments and activities such as discussions of literary works and presentations.

209H  Honors English 9

1 Credit - Two Semesters. Prerequisite:  Final grade of B or above in 8th grade English or teacher recommendation

Honors English 9 is similar in content to English 9, but material is covered more in-depth and at an advanced level.

210  English 10

1 Credit - Two Semesters

English 10 is a composite of work in grammar, writing and literature. In composition, students focus on the writing process. Expressive writing, informative writing, persuasive writing and imaginative writing are studied. In literature, students develop an understanding of non-fiction selections, short stories, drama, novelsand essays.

210H  Honors English 10

211  English 11

1 Credit - Two Semesters

The course studies the development of American Literature from the Puritan period to modern day with an examination of the way in which writings reflects the times. Emphasis will be placed on examining historic speeches, documents and dramas related to the different literary movements. Following a study of the models, students will apply the philosophies and principles of the writings to their own compositions. Composition and grammar study will incorporate exercises in expressive writing, informative writing, persuasive writing, analytical writing and research, oral communication skills will be developed through a variety of options that may include: panel discussions, group discussions, oral presentations, recitations, and reader’s theater.

211H  Honors English 11

1 Credit - Two Semesters. Prerequisite: Final grade of B or above in English 10 or teacher recommendation

Honors English 11 is similar in content to English 11, but material is covered more in-depth and at an advanced level.

212  English 12/Composition
1 Credit - Two Semesters

Students will continue the development of skills taught in English 11 through a variety of literature and composition options. Composition and grammar activities as well as exercises will develop writing and speaking skills. Students will review the writing process and develop their writing skills through personal writing, analytical writing, and research writing.

212H  Honors English 12

1 Credit - Two Semesters. Prerequisite:  Final grade of B or above in English 11 or teacher recommendation

This class is designed to prepare students for college-level writing, thinking and reading. Students will be doing more in-depth reading and analysis with focus on non-fiction as opposed to literature. The study of rhetoric, focusing on the purpose and function of writing, will also be explored. The course includes a variety of subjects and genres in a thematic focus. A summer reading/writing assignment is part of the course of study and must be completed to participate in the class.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT – 4 credits required for graduation (Must include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II)

110  Algebra I

1 Credit - Two Semesters. Teacher recommendation needed

This course covers the standard topics of Algebra I including signed numbers, integer exponents, scientific notations, systems of linear equations, graphs, equations of linear functions, and geometric concepts.

Algebra 1A

1 Credit - Two Semesters. 

This course will cover a more in-depth look at the first half of the Algebra 1 standards. A few of the concepts covered will be signed numbers, integer exponents, linear equations and graphs. Students will get a more solid foundation of Algebra I concepts when they take Algebra 1A and Algebra 1B sequence.

Algebra 1B

1 Credit - Two Semesters. Prerequisite: Algebra 1A

This course will cover a more in-depth look at the second half of the Algebra 1 standards. A few of the concepts covered will be systems of equations, nonlinear equations, exponents, probability, statistics, and graphs. Students will get a more solid foundation of Algebra I concepts when they take Algebra 1A and Algebra 1B sequence.

120 Geometry

1 Credit - Two Semesters.  Prerequisite: Algebra I or Algebra 1A/Algebra 1B

This course is designed to expose the students to a variety of geometric concepts including proving theorems and using rulers and compasses to construct a variety of geometric properties, and an introduction to trigonometry.

130  Algebra II

1 Credit - Two Semesters.  Prerequisite: Geometry

This course is designed to complete the automation of the fundamental skills of Algebra. Also emphasized is right triangle trigonometry, similar triangle problems, problems of the equation of a line, complex numbers, completing the square, and deriving and using quadratic formula.

140  Pre-Calculus

1 Credit - Two Semesters.  Prerequisite: Algebra II

This course continues the study of Geometry, Trigonometry and Advanced Algebra concepts.

Graphing Calculator: Students are recommended to have a Graphing Calculator. Acceptable models include TI-83, TI-84, TI-84 Plus, or a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition.  Riverside has a limited number of calculators available for classroom use.

150 Calculus

1 Credit - Two Semesters.  Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus.

This course contains an in-depth coverage of all topics required for Calculus courses at the collegiate level. This course deals with logarithmic and trigonometric functions, problems on limits, proofs, applications of differentials, work maximum/minimum and solids of revolution problems, etc.

Graphing Calculator: Students are recommended to have a Graphing Calculator. Acceptable models include TI-84, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition or TI-89.  Riverside has a limited number of calculators available for classroom use.

180 Applied Math for Life

1 Credit - Two Semesters. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation ONLY

This course will cover topics of Algebra and Geometry and how they are used in our everyday lives. Some of the concepts covered will be : Graphing, area, perimeter, volume, ratios, proportions, and logical reasoning. The students will be expected to apply their understanding to real world situations. This class is open for Seniors only, with teacher recommendation.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT - 3 credits required for graduation (Must include Biology I and Physics I)

420 Biology I

1 Credit - Two Semesters.

Students demonstrate an understanding of how living systems function and how they interact with the physical environment. This includes an understanding of the cycling of matter and flow of energy in living systems. An understanding of the characteristics, structure and function of cells, organisms and living systems will be developed. Students will also develop a deeper understanding of the principles of heredity, biological evolution, zoology, and the diversity and interdependence of life. Students demonstrate an understanding of different historical perspectives, scientific approaches and emerging scientific issues associated with the life sciences. Students will participate in and apply the processes of scientific investigations. The students will study how science and technology are interconnected. Students will learn about ethical practices and guidelines in which science operates and how the knowledge, skills, and interests learned in science classes apply to possible careers. Students will spend a large amount of time in a laboratory setting and will become proficient in the use of a microscope. An in-depth study of the 6 kingdoms of organisms will involve dissection procedures. Students will prepare for the End of Course Test.

460H Physics I

1 Credit - Two Semesters.  Prerequisite: Physics I

The goal of this course is to prepare students in science for first year college physics.  Students will participate in inquiry based labs and discussion that are designed to improve math skills and learn problem solving and critical thinking skills to solve general problems.  Topics include measurement, kinematics, dynamics, energy, universal gravitation.

Zoology

1 Credit - Two Semesters.  Prerequisite:  Biology I 

Zoology is an in-depth study of animals of all types and sizes from the simple sponge to complex vertebrates. Focusing on the body systems, zoology moves from some introductory parts and processes of the body before transitioning to simple organisms like sponges and worms. Then moving up the phylogenetic tree to complex invertebrates. Soon after the course involves studying the evolution of mammals before discussing the nature of animal behavior. Zoology is a quick paced class with 3-4 days a week of intense note taking and 1-2 days of independent work, videos and assessment.

440H  Anatomy & Physiology

1 Credit - Two Semesters.  Prerequisite: Biology I or II minimum final grade of C or teacher recommendation.

        This course is a study of Human Anatomy and Physiology. The students will study the human body by studying the organ systems of the body. Anatomy is the study of the internal and external structures of the human body. Physiology is the study of human body functions. The students will develop basic knowledge of physiology as represented by the latest advances in this subject area as well as gaining an understanding of the structure of the body. The students will also develop a mastery of vocabulary in order to understand physiological and anatomical concepts clearly. Students will study the structure of major organs by dissecting representative mammal organs. Students will be aided in improving their daily life making them more knowledgeable about their body, as well as a more responsible individual. A further goal is to prepare students, who are interested, for further specialized work in this field of study.

450H  Chemistry I with option for CCP Credit

1 Credit - Two Semesters.

The topics in this  the makeup of matter, the design of atoms, the periodic table, bonding, formulas, reactions, solutions, acids, bases, and thermodynamics. The lab experiments will incorporate writing and the following tasks in problem solving: planning and designing, performance, analysis, and application. This is a college prep class designed for students that may require college sciences. Must be a Junior or Senior.

Chemistry II with option for CCP Credit

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Chemistry I

The purpose of this course it to provide students with the fundamentals of inorganic chemistry that can be used to predict based on patterns, solve real problems and think critically.  This course is a continuation of Honor’s Chemistry I CCP (Clark State University General Chemistry 1210).

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT - 3 credits required for graduation (Must include American History, World History, and American Government).

300  American History

1 Credit - Two Semesters

American History covers our story from the discovery and settlement of America to present day. The primary purpose of this course is to cultivate an awareness of and an appreciation for our great American Heritage. This must be accomplished by teaching the truth in an honest and convincing manner. Students must develop skills, understanding and attitudes necessary for each individual to serve society and themselves in the best possible manner. A true understanding of the responsibilities and privileges of our democratic societies can only come when we fully comprehend that the recent grows out to the past and the future depends on an enlightened present.

310  World History

1 Credit - Two Semesters

This survey course is designed to allow the 10th grade students to experience an overview of the social studies courses offered throughout their high school career. The first ten weeks will be spent as a review of governmental principles, citizenship and civic duties. The remainder of the course will be spent introducing other social studies courses such as Geography, Psychology, Sociology and Economics.

340  American Government

1 Credit - Two Semesters

Government is a course that allows students to learn about their system of government and how it works. The earliest ideas on which our nations were founded will be explored and discussed. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights will be dealt with in detail. Our political system, including all three branches of government will be covered so that the students will leave high school with a better understanding of American Government and their responsibilities and rights.

320  Military History & Economics

1 Credit – Two Semesters

Military History course covers the ancient past of military right up to modern day. There is an emphasis on famous major battles, famous wars, major changes in weaponry and famous military leaders.

Economics course is the study of how society uses its resources to satisfy the desires of its citizens for goods and services.

HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT- ½ credit of each are required for graduation.

Health
½ Credit - One Semester

This course is designed to cover both physical and mental health as well as social adaptability, with strong emphasis placed on personality, family, and community health as well as informative study about the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Alcohol, smoking, and drugs, in addition to the practical application and understanding of first aid will also be covered.

Physical Education & Weight Lifting

½ Credit - Two Semesters

Physical Education is a course aimed at providing each student with physical activity and developing worthy use of leisure time. A primary goal is to instill in students a desire to keep their bodies physically fit throughout their lifetime. During the year, students will participate in various sports, both team and individual.

Weight Lifting is a course where students will learn proper lifting techniques while increasing overall body strength. Participating students will become more knowledgeable about the components of becoming physically fit. The class will focus mainly on Free weights, core strength, plyometrics and agility. Students need no prior knowledge to participate.

Physical Education Waiver Option
The Ohio Revised Code requires that high school students to accumulate ½ credit of physical education for graduation. A new option that is available to schools is to allow students who compete in two complete seasons of interscholastic sports, cheerleading or two full seasons of marching band to be excused from the physical education requirement. Students receive no credit for participation in interscholastic athletics, only exemption from the physical education requirement. Students will have to choose other course offerings to make up the ½ credit.

A student must use one method or the other to fulfill the graduation requirement. Students who select this option cannot opt to take less than the full ½ credit or two full seasons of interscholastic sports, cheerleading or two full seasons of marching band. For example, they may not choose to trade ¼ physical education credit for 1 season in sports. The athletic director and band director are responsible for providing a roster of students who participated in interscholastic sports, cheerleading or band to the guidance department at the end of each season. If a student-athlete is cut, quits or does not complete a full athletic season for any reason, the season does not count as one of the full two seasons. The student would then be responsible to make up the physical education credit Students should complete the Agreement to Waive Physical Education Requirements form prior to participation in the interscholastic sports, cheerleading or band.

Students cannot count interscholastic sports, cheerleading or marching band prior to the 2009 fall season. Students must sign an agreement stating their understanding and acceptance of this policy.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT

S100  Spanish I

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Final grade of  C or better in most recent English class.

Emphasis is placed on basic pronunciation, which is exercised through dialogues and drill practices. Verb structure and basic grammar are covered, stressing the present tense. In addition, culture is studied through periodic use of pictures, short essays and music.

S110  Spanish II

1 Credit - Two Semesters Course  Prerequisite: Spanish I

During the second year, students are encouraged to speak Spanish and lessons are taught in Spanish. All verb tenses are learned, enabling students to do much more reading. Culture selections are translated and discussed in Spanish.

S120  Spanish III

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Spanish II

This course allows for much improvisation. Reading comprehension is more extensive and allows for a greater variety of materials to be covered. Short stories by Spanish authors are discussed in Spanish. This reading material adds to the cultural knowledge of the students while furthering their exposure to famous authors.

Spanish IV

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Spanish III

This course is a continuation of Spanish 3. The goal for students is to be able to understand and communicate about simple, everyday topics in each of the three modes of communication: interpretive, representational and interpersonal communication. Communication will be guided by the vocabulary learned throughout the course on geography and the culture of Spanish speaking countries.


MUSIC DEPARTMENT

High School Band

1 Credit - Two Semester

High school band is the in-school only track for students wishing to be in band. Students will continue to develop musical skills through concert music. Students will develop instrumental skills through solo and ensemble performances and will participate in OMEA Adjudicated Events (Solo and Group) and Concerts. Students will participate in three concerts throughout the year with opportunities for more performances.

Marching Band

The high school marching band is a high-level performance group, which combines a high standard of musical knowledge and skill with precision marching fundamentals and drill design. Marching band functions principally through the summer and fall, performing for all football games, local events, parades, festivals and adjudicated events (contests). The band will perform at all functions designated by the director and the high school principal throughout the entire year. Known as the “Band of Pirates!” the marching band is building tradition filled with pride and enthusiasm, accompanied by a constant demand for the finest level of performance attainable. Participating in Marching Band will fulfil the Physical Education waiver requirement.

CHOIR HS  HS Choir  

1 Credit - Two Semester

The Choir is comprised of anyone interested in vocal music at Riverside Schools. The primary focus of this ensemble is to review previously learned knowledge and skills, as well as develop necessary ensemble performance skills including solfege and sight-singing. This ensemble performs quality, appropriately challenging, entertaining literature based on artistic and educational merit.

A100  Art I

1 Credit - Two Semesters

This Art course consists of knowledge and use of the fundamentals of drawing, painting, design, and Art History. It stresses the use of a variety of media; paint, pencil, charcoal, watercolor and ink. It requires participation in Art shows.

A110  Art II

1 Credit - Two Semesters   Prerequisite:  Art I

This class builds off of Art I, in that it continues to develop the fundamentals learned in Art I, and then adds more concentration into painting and more complex mediums.  Students will also learn fundamentals of photography and dive deeper into what makes a successful picture.  They will learn how to use a DSLR Camera and also will be introduced to editing photos on a IPAD.  Students will also be introduced to digital painting on the IPAD utilizing different apps and the Apple Pencil.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in Art Shows.

Projected Course Fees:  $20 per semester

A120 Art III 

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite:  Final grade of B or above in Art II or teacher recommendation.

Art III consists of continued development of skills learned in Art II.  There will be as strong emphasis placed on developing concepts and ideas in the art the student chooses to create and also demonstrating strong technical skills.  Students will have more individualization in terms of projects and decision in terms of media and subject matter but are gearing projects towards building a portfolio of artwork to showcase their skill in different mediums.  Students will learn how use oil paint in at least one of their projects.  Students will also continue to work with DSLR Cameras and editing photographs.  Students will also be required to work with digital painting and design on the IPAD.  Participation in the planning and execution of a phase of the Art Show is expected.

A120 Art IV

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite:  Final grade of B or above in Art III or teacher recommendation.

Art IV consists of demonstrating mastery of mediums that a student has chosen to develop their skill in.  Students will choose projects and mediums based off of their own focus as an artist and on completing a portfolio that showcases the skills and concepts they have learning throughout their years of taking high school art.  The portfolio should be complete so if they are considering a career in a

fine Art related field it is ready for a University Art Department to review it for acceptance into the program and scholarship consideration.  Students will also continue learning digital painting using an IPAD with the Apple Pencil.  Student should be able to create art using the programs on the IPAD for digital painting.  Participation in the planning and execution of a phase of the Art Show is expected.

AGRIBUSINESS and PRODUCTION SYSTEMS PROGRAM

Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (AFNR)

1 Credit - Two Semesters (Required course for all other Ag courses)

This first course in the career field is an introduction to Agricultural and Environmental Systems. Students will be introduced to the scope of the Agricultural and Environmental Systems career field. They will examine principles of food science, natural resource management, animal science & management, plant & horticultural science, power technology and bioscience. Students will examine the FFA organization and Supervised Agricultural Experience programs. Throughout the course, students will develop communication, leadership and business skills essential to the agriculture industry. Other subjects in this class are: Parliamentary Procedure, & Woodworking & welding fabrication.

Livestock Selection, Nutrition and Management

1 Credit - Two Semesters   Prerequisite:  AFNR or concurrently with AFNR

Students will identify and apply principles and routine husbandry practices to production animal populations. Topics will include principles of nutrition, feed utilization, animal welfare, selection and management of facilities and herd populations. Students will apply knowledge of production animal care to enhance animal growth, selection of breeding stock, and management practices. Throughout the course, students will develop management plans reflecting practices for care and legal compliance. Other subjects covered are rural soil science, parliamentary procedure skills, public speaking, woodworking, mig welding and metal engineering.

Greenhouse and Nursery Management

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite:  AFNR /Livestock or Teacher approval

College credit opportunities are available for this course

Students will learn the operational practices needed for the successful growth of nursery stock and/or greenhouse plants. They will learn essential greenhouse practices including water and fertilizer distribution, lighting, ventilation and temperature control.  Students will learn pest and disease identification and control along with bio-security practices. Students will demonstrate knowledge of propagation methods, plant health, nutrition, and growth stimulation. Throughout this course, business and employability skills will be emphasized. The major emphasis of this course includes horticultural landscape design, urban soil management, and greenhouse operations. Students will design plan, build, and calculate cost for landscape design projects. Students will be working outside on landscape designs for the school and or community as their community service project.  Other topics include record keeping & woodworking.

College Credit for Qualified Students:  CTAG credit at any state institution with a course match for CTAGP002 (Soil Fertility & Fertilizers, 3 sem hours)

Mechanical Principles

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite:   AFNR /Livestock or Teacher approval

Students will engage in the mechanical principles utilized in animal and plant production systems. They will learn electrical theory, design, wiring, hydraulic and pneumatic theory, along with plumbing & construction concepts.  Students will apply knowledge of metal fabrication applicable to the agricultural industry along with identify, diagnose, and maintain small air-cooled engines. Throughout the course, students will learn critical components of site and personal safety as well as communication and leadership skills.

Business Management for Agricultural and Environmental Systems

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite:   AFNR /Livestock or Teacher approval

Students will examine elements of business, identify organizational structures and apply management skills while developing business plans, financial reports and strategic goals for new ventures or existing businesses. Learners will use marketing concepts to evaluate the marketing environment and develop a marketing plan with marketing channels, product approaches, promotion and pricing strategies. Throughout the course, students will apply concepts of ethics and professionalism while implications of business regulations will be identified.

Agricultural and Environmental Systems Capstone 

1 - 2 Credits - Two Semesters   Prerequisite: Completion of four (4) ag courses or concurrent with 4th ag course. Seniors ONLY

Students apply Agricultural and Environmental Systems program knowledge and skills in a more comprehensive and authentic way and occur both in and away from school.  This cooperative education program is project/problem-based and can be completed through working for an agricultural or related business, establishing and successfully operating an agricultural related small business, performing research or other projects decided upon by student, instructor and other parties.  Under supervision of the school and through partnerships, students combine classroom learning with work experience to benefit themselves and others.  These can take the form of research, mentorship employment (work study), cooperative education, apprenticeships and internships.  Total credits earned will be determined by the type of project and agreements by student, instructor and other parties.

Additional College Credit for Qualified Students:  Articulated credit at Clark State Community College for AGR 1250 (Animal Agriculture, 3 sem hours) and MATH 1200 (Technical Math for Agriculture, 3 sem hours).  Students must pass proficiency examination to earn credit.


BUSINESS & ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICE CAREER TECH PROGRAM

Business Foundations:  

1 Credit - Two Semesters (Required course for all other Business classes)

This is the first course for the Business and Administrative Services career field. Students will obtain knowledge and skills in fundamental business activities. They will acquire knowledge of business processes, economics and business relationships. Students will use technology to synthesize and share business information. Employability skills, leadership and communications and personal financial literacy will be addressed.

 

Office Management

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Business Foundations

--Students will apply techniques used to manage people and information in a business environment.  Students will learn to build relationships with clients, employees, peers and stakeholders and to assist new employees.  They will manage business records, gather and disseminate information, and preserve critical artifacts.  They will also examine contracts, internal controls and compliance requirements.  Business office tools and applications will be emphasized though use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher.

Financial Accounting

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Business Foundations

Students will track, record, summarize, and report a business’s financial transactions.  They will develop financial documents, project future income and expenses, and evaluate the accuracy of a business’s financial information.  Students will also apply tools, strategies, and systems to evaluate a company’s financial performance and monitor the use of financial resources.  Technology, employability skills, leadership and communication will be incorporated in classroom activities.

Fundamentals of Business and Administrative Services

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Business Foundations  (Intended as course 4 in the Business Program)

This course introduces students to the specializations offered in Business and Administrative Services.  Students will obtain fundamental knowledge and skills in general management, business informatics and office management.  They will acquire knowledge of business operations, business relationships, resource management, process management and financial principles.  Students will use technological tools and applications to develop business insights.

Business Pathway Capstone Project or Internship

1- 2 Credits - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Completion of four (4) business courses or concurrent with 4th Business course. Seniors ONLY

Students will apply knowledge, attitudes and skills that were learned in a Business and Administrative Services program in a more comprehensive and authentic way in this capstone course. Capstones often include project- based learning opportunities that occur both in and away from school. The Capstone course can be a vehicle students may use to earn Microsoft Office System (MOS) certifications which can be used as credential points through Ohio Department of Education’s graduation pathway. Under supervision of the school and through community partnerships, students may combine classroom learning with work experience for an internship, to gain real work experience in an office setting.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING CAREER PROGRAM

Manufacturing Operations

Students will learn the production processes applied across manufacturing operations. Students will be able to demonstrate a broad array of technical skills with an emphasis given to quality practices, measurement, maintenance and safety. Students in this course may earn college credit.

In this course, students will be introduced to all aspects of computer-integrated manufacturing. They will learn about robotics and automation, manufacturing processes, computer modeling, manufacturing equipment, and flexible manufacturing systems. Digital Electronics

Students are introduced to the process of combinational and sequential logic design. The system uses a precise sequence of discrete voltages, representing numbers, non-numeric symbols or commands for input, processing, transmission, storage, or display. Engineering standards and methods for technical documentation will also be learned.

Robotics

Students will code, compile, and debug programs using the robotic programming language. Manufacturing Capstone

1- 2 Credits - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Senior, with permission of Instructor and Guidance Department

The capstone course provides opportunities for students to apply knowledge, attitudes and skills that were learned in Manufacturing program in a more comprehensive and authentic way. Capstones often include project/problem based learning opportunities that occur both in and away from school. Under supervision of the school and through community partnerships, students may combine classroom learning with work experience. This course can be delivered through a variety of delivery methods including cooperative education or apprenticeship.

MEDIA ARTS PROGRAM

Media Arts Primer

1 Credit - Two Semesters  (Required course for all other Media Arts classes)

In this first course of the Media Arts pathway, students will learn the basics of photography, videography, radio broadcasting and graphic design. Students will work on MacBooks. Creativity and a community atmosphere make this class a great way to explore an out-of-the-box approach to learning through projects, team building and individual self discovery.


Audio Broadcast (Radio)                                        

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Media Arts Primer

Students will learn how a radio station works. They will try their hand at all management roles, including sports, news, music, promotions and management. Students will learn how music has evolved and the roles radio and music play in popular culture. Students will be part of the Pirate Crew at WDEQ and be part of one of the few student-run radio stations in Ohio. This group will be responsible for DJing school dances and producing the school newspaper, The Treasure MAP. 


Video Broadcast                                         

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Media Arts Primer

Students will view, discuss, read, and write about a wide variety of films and news broadcasts and develop an understanding of the language of film and video, and explore the emotional and intellectual effects of the visual media on viewers. Students will make their own videos & study YouTube and the Web. Students plan and shoot video while adhering to laws related to defamation, libel, copyright and privacy.


Sports & Entertainment Marketing (Business of Arts & Communications)                        

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Media Arts Primer, senior standing or junior with teacher recommendation.

The class explores the business of sports and entertainment marketing. From events such as concerts and sporting events, students will learn all aspects of management. Topics include marketing, branding, producing, promoting, booking, budgeting and merchandising, etc. This class also features post-secondary planning including college and job applications. This class is responsible for special events and promotions such as PowderPuff Football, Jock Volleyball and other school-wide assemblies and events.


MAP Capstone

1- 2 Credits - Two Semesters  Prerequisite: Senior standing and completion MAP pathway 

If you have enjoyed other media classes and always wanted to spend more time in one area, this class will allow you to explore a Passion Project - a yearlong project of your own choosing. Capstones are project/problem-based learning opportunities that occur both in and away from school. Under supervision of the school and through partnerships, you combine classroom learning with work experience to benefit themselves and others. These can take the form of mentorship employment, cooperative education, apprenticeships and internships. You must take control of your own learning experience.

ELECTIVE:

Y100  Yearbook (Grades 10-12)

1 Credit - Two Semesters  Course Requirement: Grade 10-12 or teacher recommendation

Students are required to sell advertising, write stories and captions, develop artwork, manage finances, take photos, conduct interviews, do layouts on computers and edit photos. It is highly recommended that interested student have taken a computer class and have a “B” average or better in English classes.
