Mac OS X: Network Printer Hold for Authentication Error

Hold for Authentication errors are a common cause of the inability to print to a house printer. Follow the steps below to check for, and resolve hold for authentication issues.

  1. Check if the printer icon in your Dock displays a caution symbol:iconarrow.jpg
  2. If the caution symbol displays, click on the printer icon to open the printer queue. Check if Hold for Authentication is displayed beneath your print job.

  3. If you saved your credentials to the keychain,  it will be necessary to go into the keychain and delete the the printer.  To open up the keychain,  click on the Spotlight located in the upper right hand corner of the screen:

  4. Click on the Spotlight icon to open.  Type in keychain in the Spotlight Search and select keychain access:

  5. This will open the following window:

  6. If you don’t see a keychain listing for the house printer, in the search field at the top right, type in the name of the printer (e.g., Dawes or lvprintsvr02 if you did not rename it.) Select the printer’s keychain entry, and delete using delete key:

  7. If the printer queue message box is still opened (if not, go to next step), you can click on the resume icon:

  8. If the printer queue is not opened, click on the printer icon to open up the
    printer queue:

  9. Click on the resume icon:

  10. You will be asked to enter your credentials to order to print to the printer.  Type in your username (lawrenceville\username) and your password:
