Introduction to classroom procedures, safety, tools, media, and expectations.

Students will:

  • Review the names of traditional art tools, media types, and demonstrate how to use them safely while adhering to proper studio procedures (VA:Cr2.2)

Portfolio Content Explanation and Planning

Students will:

  • Learn what generally should go into an art portfolio to show a good breadth of experience, focus, and creativity. (VA:Cr2.2)(VA:Pr5.1)(VA:Re9.1)
  • Plan the creation of their personal portfolio and the quality that it must have. (VA:Cr2.3) (VA:Pr4.1)(VA:Cn10.1)

2-3 Weeks

Gesture and Figure Drawing

Students will:

  • Practice how to quickly sketch full figures within a series of time prompts using gesture drawing.  (VA:Cr1.2)(VA:Re:7.2)
  • Learn how to transition Gesture Drawings into Figure Drawings. (VA:Cr1.1)(VA:Cr2.1) (VA:Cr3.1)
  • Create and submit into their portfolio a Figure drawing showing movement using gesture drawings as the starting point. (VA:Cr1.1)(VA:Cr2.1)(VA:Cr:2.2)(VA:Cr3.1)(VA:Pr6.1)(VA:Re7.1)

2-3 Weeks

Still Life Creation

Students will:

  • Learn the history of Still Life art and how to set up a proper still life subject. (VA:Cr1.2)(VA:Re:7.2)
  • Create and submit into their portfolio a Still Life piece that was created using a Still Life set up that was self created. (VA:Cr1.1)(VA:Cr2.1)(VA:Cr:2.2)(VA:Cr3.1)(VA:Pr6.1)(VA:Re7.1)

3-4 Weeks

Landscapes

Students will:

  • Review the history and uses of Landscape art pre and post Impressionism. (VA:Cr1.2) (VA:Re:7.2)
  • Draft, paint, and submit into their portfolio a Landscape piece from a self picked reference.

3-4 Weeks

Portraits

Students will:

  • Review different portraits in different art styles throughout history and recognize what art period each are from. (VA:Cr1.2)(VA:Re:7.2)
  • Create and submit into their portfolio either a Portrait or Self portrait piece using a subject of their choice. (VA:Cr1.1)(VA:Cr2.1)(VA:Cr:2.2)(VA:Cr3.1)(VA:Pr6.1)(VA:Re7.1)

3-4 Weeks

Photography

Students will:

  • Learn the history of Photography and how its use in art has changed from inception to current day. (VA:Cr1.2)(VA:Re:7.2)
  • Take photographs of a subject or idea of their choosing, then study, curate and submit a Photo Series into their portfolio with an artist statement describing their work. (VA:Cr1.1)(VA:Cr2.1)(VA:Cr:2.2)(VA:Cr3.1)(VA:Pr4.1)(VA:Pr6.1)(VA:Re7.1)

2-3 Weeks

Digital Art and Graphic Design

Students will:

  • Be introduced to the history of Digital Art and its many avenues of creation, common programs available for use, and how Digital Art has affected advertising, marketing, concept art, and digital design. (VA:Cr1.2)(VA:Re:7.2)
  • Design and submit into their portfolio a series of related pieces using a self directed theme. (VA:Cr1.1)(VA:Cr2.1)(VA:Cr:2.2)(VA:Cr3.1)(VA:Pr6.1)(VA:Re7.1)(VA:Cn10.1)

3-4 Weeks

Movie Premiere Poster

Students will:

  • Study different types of Movie Premiere advertisements used throughout history. (VA:Cr1.2) (VA:Re:7.2)
  • Conceptualize, Draft, and Create a unique movie premiere poster using a self selected subject or film choice. (VA:Cr1.1)(VA:Cr2.1)(VA:Cr:2.2)(VA:Cr3.1)(VA:Pr6.1)(VA:Re7.1)

Solo Projects

and Studio Time

Students will:

  • Draft, create, and submit to their portfolio 8 additional artworks that are self driven and directed. These artworks are fully student directed. (VA:Cr1.1)(VA:Cr2.1)(VA:Cr:2.2)(VA:Cr3.1)(VA:Pr6.1)(VA:Re7.1)

Digital Gallery

Students will:

  • Learn about Gallery types and how to professionally set up and use gallery space.
  • Curate and Present a Digital Gallery containing at least 13 artworks they created during this class. (VA:Cr1.1)(VA:Cr2.1)(VA:Cr:2.2)(VA:Cr3.1)(VA:Pr6.1)(VA:Re7.1)(VA:Cn10.1)
  • Write an artist statement for a minimum of 10 artworks describing the process, meanings, and creation of their work. (VA:Pr4.1)(VA:Pr5.1)(VA.Pr6.1)

Studio Vocabulary

Students will:

  • Learn and understand common and uncommon vernacular and tools used in art throughout history and modern day. (VA:Cr2.2)(VA:Re7.1)(VA:Re7.2)(VA:Cn11.1)

Requested Projects

  • Regularly we receive requests from school groups and the community at large to design logos, uniforms, and other collaborative requests. These projects give students the experience of working for a ‘client’ or a ‘contract’ while expanding their art skill for a practical use.
