Week 2 (9/10-9/21)

Hi teachers!  Here are your grade-level instructions for our next Science Lab lessons.

The "Before Science Lab" instructions should be complete prior to coming to your next Science Lab.  Remember, "After Science Lab" are just suggestions!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st grade: Why are polar bears white?

Before Science Lab:

After Science Lab: All of the items in the “Extras” section are worth a look.  The readings require a ReadWorks account, but it’s free to sign up.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2nd Grade: Do plants eat dirt?

Before Science Lab:

After Science Lab: Please see the attachment to this e-mail, as you will need to help your students take care of their “greenhouses” over the next few weeks.  You can also check out the reading in the “Extras” section, and the assessment is a good tool for encouraging students to think more deeply about this topic.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3rd Grade: Why do plants give us fruit?

Before Science Lab:

After Science Lab: The reading about a “Science Fruit Salad” is pretty good, but the Smithonian activity about pollinators and how they help us is EXCELLENT.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4th Grade: How does your brain control your body?

Before Science Lab:

After Science Lab: The ReadWorks readings are worth a look (requires a free account) and there are a couple of reaction time simulators that could be fun on Chromebooks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5th Grade: What do plants eat?

Before Science Lab:

After Science Lab:  There is an experiment in the “Extras” section about leaves...if you’d like to try it in your classroom, I have microscopes you can borrow.  Just let me know.  You might also want to check out the NOVA video and the reading about redwood trees.
