The Farmington Public Schools believe that all students are capable of acquiring the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed for productive, ethical and responsible citizenship in an evolving world community. As an innovative learning organization, the Farmington school district is deeply committed to continuous improvement. Thus, collaborative interactions among students, educators, parents, and families emphasize the importance of clear expectations, rigorous standards-led curriculum, inspired instruction, personal effort and engaged relationships leading to high levels of achievement for all learners.
The mission of the Farmington Public Schools is to enable all students to achieve academic and personal excellence, exhibit persistent effort and live as resourceful, inquiring and contributing global citizens.
Intellectual Discipline
The Farmington Public Schools will develop intellectual discipline by:
- Providing all children with knowledge and skills in core academic areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, social sciences, English, world languages and the arts as they progress through the school system. The teaching of these basic academic skills is considered to be a primary function of the public schools.
- Helping each child to develop the power to think critically, to communicate effectively, to solve problems, to reason independently and make decisions, and to accept responsibility for self-evaluation and personal development.
- Helping each child gain access to the accumulated culture and knowledge of man.
Economic and Vocational Competence
The Farmington Public Schools will foster economic and vocational competence by:
- Helping all students understand how to function effectively in the American economic system.
- Developing an appreciation of global interdependence in the world economy.
- Offering guidance and counseling to help every student prepare for productive, rewarding lives and responsible citizenship.
- Providing every student with usable skills and attitudes that will promote life long learning.
Citizenship
The Farmington Public Schools will promote civic responsibility by:
- Providing opportunities and experiences which emphasize the American heritage and the responsibility and privileges of citizenship.
- Helping equip each child for intelligent participation in the democratic process through which this country is governed.
- Teaching each child to understand the relationship between the United States and other nations of the world.
Political and Social Relations
The Farmington Public Schools will develop competence in political and social relations by:
- Assisting each child to develop the skills and dispositions that will enable productive collaboration with others in the local and global community.
- Helping each child to develop a respect for the rights of others as individuals and as groups and to understand personal rights and responsibilities in a democratic society.
- Assisting each child to develop an appreciation of diversity and to cooperate with others in a complex world.
Moral Values and Ethical Conduct
The Farmington Public Schools will foster moral values and ethical conduct by:
- Assisting each child to develop moral values, ethical standards of conduct and basic integrity.
- Helping each child to develop purposeful goals in life.
Self-Realization and Mental and Physical Health
The Farmington Public Schools will promote self-actualization and mental and physical health by:
- Helping each child attain optimum development by fostering a belief in every person’s capacity to continuously grow and learn through educational programs which take into account individual differences and encourage creativity.
- Helping each child deal constructively with the psychological tensions inherent in continuing change and adaptation.
- Being concerned for the development of a positive self-concept.
- Providing all children opportunities for physical education, health, and athletic activities.
