Specials 5th-8th Grade October Newsletter
Physical Education and Health Grades 5-8 In PE class, students will be learning and practicing the mechanics of throwing and catching. Students will then apply these skills during activities such as softball, handball and flag football. In Health class, students are continuing to learn about bullying: an overview of bullying, types of bullying, how to report bullying, how to avoid conflict, and how to respect differences. Wellness Policy Reminder: All snacks that are brought for lunch must be individual, single-serving packages (1 per student). We allow only 3 beverages during the school day: plain water (all day), 6 oz. of low-fat or fat free milk (breakfast and lunch), and 8 oz. of 100% juice (lunch only). All foods and beverages that do not meet our policy requirements can be taken away from students and returned to them to take home at the end of the school day. School breakfast is available to all students when they enter the building. Students may not bring breakfast from home into the building. 4th Annual Bateman Mile: Friday, October 5, 2018: Students will walk/jog laps of our outside playground area to raise money for the PE/Health Department. T-Shirts will cost $10. The event will take place during the students’ recess periods. Thank you for your support! Health and Wellness Links The sites listed below are resources for finding health-related information. https://www.fns.usda.gov/tn/team-nutrition | Fine Arts Grades 5-8 5th Grade students will start a project involving their name, symmetry and reflection. The 6th Grade students will be creating large scale pop art self-portraits. 7th Grade students will begin their drawing unit on 3-Dimensional Forms. Students will learn how to illustrate dimension by converting shapes into forms with charcoal pencils. They will use drawing techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and blending. 8th grade students will begin their drawing unit on value. This is an important tool for artists as it defines form and creates spatial illusions. They will study and draw value scales using graphite pencils. Mid October: Information regarding after school art clubs will be available starting the second week of October. The selection process will be based on a lottery system. Library Science (Research) The 5th and 6th graders will be concentrating on gaining access to quality resources by investigating the Dewey Decimal System along with the Bateman School Library Catalog and CPS databases as well as focusing on using effective keyword searches. The 7th and 8th graders will be working on locating, evaluating and citing sources to use with their STEM Science Projects. The students will investigate databases as well as exploring how to include internal citations within their science research. Upcoming Event: Our fall book fair is scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday, Nov. 13-15, 2018, which is coinciding with Q1 Parent-Teacher Conferences. Toward the end of the month, they will begin learning some basic conversational phrases. Level 2 students will continue practicing their speaking and writing skills. They will also begin to practice with verb conjugation and discussing the difference between using the verbs “ser” and “estar”. I would also like to invite all students to bring artifacts and pictures from Spanish speaking countries to class to share. It would be wonderful to be able to see authentic items from a variety of cultures! |
