Dual Enrollment - Frequently Asked Questions
What is dual enrollment?
Dual enrollment, referred to as “concurrent enrollment”, is an effort to encourage a broader range of students to experience postsecondary coursework and its increased academic rigor, while still in the supportive environment of their local high school. The intent is to increase the number of students that go on to postsecondary education and to decrease the need for remedial coursework at postsecondary institutions. Dual enrollment can be administered in more than one way. In some cases, it is a locally administered program that allows a secondary student to concurrently enroll in postsecondary courses and to receive both secondary and postsecondary credit for that coursework. In other cases, students attend class on a college campus with college students.
What are some of the benefits of dual enrollment?
Is there a limit on how many credits I can take?
Keystone College: Students will be allowed to enroll up to 30 post-secondary credits TOTAL through dual enrollment at Keystone College.
Lackawanna College: Students will not be allowed to enroll in more than 12 post-secondary credits through dual enrollment per academic year. However, students can take 6 additional credits in summer sessions.
University of Scranton: Students may enroll in a maximum of 3 credits per semester.
Who is eligible for the dual enrollment program at Lakeland Jr/Sr High School?

Do I need to achieve a minimum grade in order to get the college credits?
Students participating in dual enrollment must earn a grade of "C" or higher in their college-level courses to continue participation. Students whose College GPA falls below 2.0/73 are ineligible to continue dual enrollment. Additionally, the college will not transcript courses without a “C” or higher; however, students are still responsible for the costs.
Are all college courses available for dual enrollment?
No. Only the courses listed below are available for dual enrollment at Lakeland through Lackawanna and Keystone College. The dual enrollment courses offered at LHS are identical to traditional Lackawanna and Keystone College courses including the use of the exact curriculum, assessment tools and instructional materials. Students and their families assume and pay for tuition, books and any fees associated with the course. Payment is required regardless of grade received in the course and regardless of whether the credits transfer to another institution.
What is the dual enrollment application process?
Lackawanna College: REGISTRATION INFORMATION WILL BE UPDATED SHORTLY.
Keystone College: Registration forms ONLY must be returned to the School Counseling Office no later than Friday, September 30, 2016. Approximately two weeks after registration forms are submitted to Keystone, their bursar’s office will issue a tuition bill to the home address listed on the application. This year registration fees are waived.
What if a course is offered both in the fall and spring at Keystone?
As our master schedule allows for only year long academic classes, not semesters like in college, you’ll have the choice in which semester you would prefer to register for. The only difference is that by selecting the spring semester, you will have a later due date to submit tuition payment to the college.
I’ve noticed some classes are offered through Keystone and Lackawanna. What does that mean for me?
You have the choice to decide which college best meets your needs in terms of cost, transferability, and any other criteria you believe is important in making the decision.
Where can additional information about the dual enrollment program and registration procedures be obtained?
Guidance office or their website: http://bit.ly/DUALatLHS. LHS works collaboratively with the admissions offices at Lackawanna and Keystone College to ensure all issues and questions are appropriately addressed.
What happens if a student fails a dual enrollment class?
If a student receives a failing grade, he/she will receive neither high school nor college credit. Failing grades appear on students’ high school transcripts. Payment is required regardless of grade received in the course.
What if a student finds out the college they intend to go to does not accept credits from Keystone or Lackawanna College?
It is encouraged that each student research and/or directly contact the colleges they are interested in to confirm what their credit transfer policy is. Neither Keystone nor Lackawanna College guarantees the acceptance of credits to any specific college or university. Lakeland Jr./Sr. High School also does not make this guarantee.
In which ways can colleges accept these credits?
It is up to each individual college and university how and if they’ll accept the credits offered through Lackawanna and Keystone College.
If a student is unsuccessful in the dual enrollment class, can they get reimbursed?
No. Payment is required regardless of grade received in the course and at no time will reimbursed be issued. Specific questions should be directed to the issuing college.
Can a student wait to see if they pass before signing up to earn dual enrollment credits?
No. Students must meet the eligibility criteria, including meeting the registration deadlines.
I passed the course, now what?
Contact the college’s registrar’s office to request an official transcript. Please note that most colleges won’t accept a transcript unless it is official, meaning it is in a sealed, unopened envelope from the issuing college. A minimal fee of $5.00 may be applied by the college in order for the request to be fulfilled.
