House Bill 439 would prohibit toxic and radioactive oil and gas waste from being applied on roadways in Ohio. According to Ohio Department of Natural Resources records, your district has ________ barrels that were used on roadways in your district since 2014. This oil and gas waste brine is not even tested before being applied to roadways. For Ohioans health and safety, better alternatives should be considered for deicing and dust suppression than an untested waste product containing radium 226, radium 228, benzene, and other carcinogens. Please urge the Chair and Vice Chair to consider giving House Bill 439 a second hearing.

I’m calling today to ask that the Natural Resources Committee hold more hearings on HB 439. This bill would disallow the continued use of toxic and radioactive oil and gas waste as a deicer and dust suppressant on roadways in Ohio.
Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ own studies show that this waste contains high amounts of radium-226 and radium-228.These chemicals have half-lives over 1600 years, meaning they accumulate in our soil and water long after they're spread.
Ohio Department of Transportation stopped using oil and gas waste products like AquaSalina due to health concerns, but many local governments still apply this waste to roads.
Representative Tristan Rader has introduced a bill to stop this practice, and I believe it deserves serious attention. This issue is much like asbestos—once widely used, now known to be dangerous. We need more hearings to fully understand the public health and environmental risks and to give science a seat at the table.
Ohioans deserve protection from toxic and radioactive materials on our roads. Please give more hearings to HB 439.
