Data Coding and Analysis
For this project I analyzed retro gaming communities and fan-produced digital genres, focusing on how different genres like READMEs, Translation patches, and ROM hacks serve as tools for preservation within these communities, along with how they convey their niche through different genres. Through the use of genre analysis, I gathered and analyzed five sources: Mother 3 README, Chrono Trigger Translation README, Forum posts that were studied by Mora-Cantallops, and Wulf’s study on video game nostalgia and retro gaming.
Code Chart
Codes | Mother 3 README | Chrono Trigger README | AtariAge Forum Post | PlanetVB Forum Post | Wulf’s Study |
Preservation | Emphasis on preserving original experience | Focused on restoring true plotline | Forum archive and maintain modifications | Archives of patches and mods for preservation | Fans rework and revisit these games |
Ethical Acknowledgement | Encourages support of original developers | Pays respect to original creators | Collaborative projects have a code of ethics | Legal concerns brought up on forums | Respect for the original work enhances nostalgia |
Community Collaboration | Translation was a group effort | Community feedback used to further translation | Forums serve as a way for community collaboration | Shared efforts in patch development | Community strengthened through shared efforts |
Documentation | README, logs, translation challenges and, lessons learned | Goes above and beyond in explaining why certain changes were made | Detailed documentation helps bring newcomers up to speed | Tutorials and guides shared within the forum site | Explained the role of documentation in maintaining and furthering a community |
Cultural Preservation | Project was framed as preserving the cultural experience | The goal was to keep it original as possible while preserving the main storyline | Forums are seen as preserving retro gaming history | Sites act as retro gaming archives, which is cultural significant | Argues that fan practices serve as a form of cultural preservation |
The different patterns that I identified within this coding scenario mainly consist of preservation, ethical acknowledgement, community collaboration, documentation, and an emphasis on cultural preservation. I believe that these elements reflect how dedicated this community is to spreading and preserving these cultural artifacts for years to come.
I believe that these patterns show that while being technically impressive already, they are so much more than that, they are preserving cultural artifacts that will allow these games and experiences to be spread to future generations. Through community collaboration, ethics and preservation efforts, these genres function as a monument to retrogaming culture as a whole.
While the original focus was on preservation and how different genres spread and convey that, I believe that the original question has evolved and now includes how these genres serve to further community and ethics within the space. The question was furthered to consider how fan writing sustains the community, not just preserving, but cultural and community values.
