Call for Papers/Call for Submissions

CFP: Robarts Centre Graduate Conference in Canadian Studies (deadline Jan 29)

The Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies at York University is pleased to invite graduate students from across Canada and around the world to join us in 2021 for our annual conference! Virtual Conference dates: 9, 16, 23 & 30 April 2021; Submissions Deadline: 29 January 2021. As the nation moves into the new decade, 2021 sees the country navigating a shifting landscape that is coming out of crisis, confronting new challenges and undergoing change. So, what are the conversations Canada and Canadians are having? How are these conversations changing (especially in a COVID and post-COVID era)? Where are they taking place? Who is changing them? What kinds of changes are occurring and/or what changes need to occur? Where is the conversation headed—and where should/could it be going? (read more)

AHGSA Empathy / Empathie Conference Deadline Extension + Call for Artworks for Visual Vitrine (deadline December 10)

We're emailing to notify you of an extension for our 15th annual conference, this year focused on the possibilities and limits of Empathy (taking place virtually on February 5th-6th, 2021). In our initial callout, the deadline for the call for papers was November 30th; to lighten the burden on potential applicants, we have decided to extend the call for papers until December 10th at 11:59pm EST. If you are still interested in contributing to the conference, there is still time, and we are open to alternative forms of participation - such as workshops, panels, or other creative / theoretical investigations of Empathy.

In a similar vein, we are also accepting artistic submissions for a Virtual Vitrine Exhibition related to the Empathy conference that will be exhibited from January 18th to February 28th, 2021. We are accepting artworks in a variety of formats (i.e. painters, graphic artists, musicians, poets, etc.), and ask that you provide a brief artist statement and biography to accompany your work. If you wish to see an example of the virtual exhibition space and platform, follow the link here. Please send us an email outlining your proposed artworks, and we will forward you to the organizer of the online exhibition. You do not have to be a Concordia student to apply - so spread the work among your networks! The deadline is also December 10th at 11:59pm EST.

Attached are the updated calls for both the Conference and Virtual Vitrine. If you have any questions about submissions for either project, please send us an email and we'd be happy to discuss details with you!  Stay well, Maegan Gaudette & Michelle Sones

Encampment Support Network

(from Sarah) Members of my choir are involved with The Encampment Support Network and I am confident that this will be of interest to many ComCulters. The three key messages are: Don’t clear encampments in Toronto, reinstate a moratorium on dismantling them, and repeal the bylaws that make it illegal to camp in the city’s parks.

For the last six months, this community-based network of volunteers has delivered essential supplies to people living in encampments in six downtown Toronto neighbourhoods. Part of their work also involves advocating for these unhoused individuals. If interested, here is the link to the actionable items for the Encampment Support Network - including some templates you can use to write to the mayor and your local counsellor: https://linktr.ee/ESN_TO

Winter 2021 enrolment - almost all major awards deposited into student accounts

From our scholarship administrator, Gino: I have manually deposited all Federal, Provincial and RGS awards for those students who have Winter 2021 fees applied to their accounts. The purpose of this early release is to allow refunds to begin flowing since Ryerson Finance has limited cheque runs for refunds due to lockdown restrictions. At this time, refunds through RAMSS are processed by cheque only and then mailed. Students, please check RAMSS. You likely have a credit in your account. Those who have already had their winter fees deducted for Winter 2021 may request a refund: RAMSS SELF-SERVE REFUND INSTRUCTIONS. You must remain enrolled for the Winter 2021 term or else funding will be reversed and must be repaid. Any payable Winter 2021 term fees balance is not due until after the holiday break.
