Opening:

Text:

Titus 2:11-14 (KJV) For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

1 Peter 2:9 (KJV) But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Introduction:

The text from which we have read this morning by no means applies simply to those belonging to Pentecostal churches but it is written of all who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ.  We must guard against feeling that our theological beliefs are far superior to that of others.  There are some things that we can learn from other denominations.

Our focus today is to note some of the things that have traditionally separated us from those of other persuasions.

  1. Baptism In The Holy Ghost
  1. Distinct and Subsequent to Regeneration
  2. Evidence of Speaking In Other Tongues
  3. The Continued Use of the Gifts
  1. Exuberance In Worship—We will be very limited in scope of discussion on worship today as we will be looking at it in depth in a couple weeks.
  1. Not Limited to Pentecost
  2. Not a Sign of Spiritual Maturity
  3. The Danger of Wildfire
  1. A Separated Lifestyle (Principles of Holy living)
  1. Modesty
  2. Moderation
  3. Marking (distinction/identity)
  4. Ministry
  1. Loss of Distinction
  1. Carnal Desire—no longer filled with the Spirit
  1. fewer baptized
  2. seldom use of gifts
  1. Forgotten Principles
  1. many still hold to certain standards of dress and conduct but fail to understand the principles on which they are based
  2. Some have left standards altogether because they have seen the hypocrisy of those who hold to the standard but do not understand or hold to the principles on which they are based
  1. Desire for Acceptance—I recently heard the story of a lady celebrating her 90th birthday.  She was asked what the best thing about being 90 was.  She replied, “Less peer pressure.”
