Part 1: A woman without a country

Even though Marji didn’t quite fit in with the Austrian social norms, she certainly learned some valuable lessons that she brought back to Iran. How did what she learned affect the choices that she made after her return to Iran? In the left-hand column, describe three examples where Marjane acted in a socially progressive way as a result of what she learned in Austria. In the right-hand column, analyze the impact that these examples had on her and/or the people around her.

Describe three examples where Marjane acted in a socially progressive way as a result of what she learned in Austria:

Analyze the impact that these examples had on her and/or the people around her:

1.”After my family, it was my friends’ turn. I had fewer apprehensions about them: we were the same age, which should make it easier to connect. “I was wrong. They all looked like the heroines of American TV series, ready to get married at the drop of a hat, if the opportunity presented itself”. (Satrapi 259)

Because she was away for a while, it took an effort to connect back with the people at home. Especially friends, people all change a lot and she was surprised how different they were despite being the same age. She learns that because they’ve now grown up in a different place, they’re used to different things.

2. “I had a hard time remembering what had brought us together before”. (Satrapi 259)

It got to a point in this chapter of her story where she doesn’t even feel connected to her friends anymore. It’s quite scary to think about where you’ve left for a good amount of time that even your friends don’t match up with you.

3.”From now on, I’m taking myself in hand”. A few scenes of her grooming. “Then I got rid of my old clothes” “And had some new clothes made”. (Satrapi 274)

She feels the need for a new start, people change all the time, and this is her changing. It’s interesting to see the change from other people’s perspectives. Because how oneself recognizes change is very different then what one could see from the other. For example, one might notice the minor changes of themselves, but from other’s perspectives, it might be something major.

Part 2: “From now on, I’m taking myself in hand” (Satrapi 273)

Marjane struggles with depression after she returns to Iran but eventually decides that she needs to take control of her own life in order to be happy. In the left-hand column, describe three examples where Marjane specifically acts in accordance with this new philosophy. In the right-hand column, analyze why these decisions were so important to Marjane.

Describe three examples where Marjane acts in order to take control of her own life to be happy:

Analyze why these decisions were so important to Marjane:

  1. “Body hair being an obsession of the oriental woman, I began with hair removal”. (Satrapi 274)

Because of the responses she has intaken, she realized changes needed to be made and she began with what there are to latch on in the social norms, or what is around in the world at that time.

  1. “And as a healthy mind is found in a healthy body, I took up exercise”. (Satrapi 275)

Another major change shown where she, in this case, is changing for the better to stay healthy. But this could be a major change to get used to as well. Some people aren’t used to exercising at all, and the hardest part is to start.

  1. “I became a sophisticated woman”. (Satrapi 274)

The way that she is defining a sophisticated woman is based on what she knows and have been thorugh. This shows how experiences can influence one’s life and shape their way of living .

Part 3: A theme of your choice

You’ve spent quite some time identifying and analyzing themes in this novel. Choose a theme that you identified as significant in your Notice Notes. In the left-hand column, describe three examples of this theme. In the right-hand column, analyze how this theme is significant in terms of one of the three essential questions. The essential questions are: 1) How does Marjane form her beliefs as she grows up? 2) When does Marjane go from being a child to a teenager to an adult? Why? 3) How do Iranians survive the repressive regime in Iran? How does Marjane survive when she is sent to live in Austria?
