Proposal for a Time Handicap Tournament

The Time Handicap Tournament is a new event which attempts to make the competition between players more equal. By giving the lower rated player more time and the higher rated player less time there should be a more even game. The latest available ratings for classic play from the ACF website will be used.

Format The tournament will be 6 round swiss tournament with 3 games played on

each of 2 consecutive Thursday evenings. The first 3 rounds will be played on Thursday 11th April 2019.

Time Limits Each game will be played over a maximum of 60 minutes with no time

increments.

Less than 100 points difference

If there is a difference of less than 100 rating points between the players, then they will each have 30 minutes to play the game.

100 points or more and less than 250 points difference

If there is a difference of 100 rating points or more and less than 250 rating points between the players, then the lower rated player will be given 40 minutes and the higher rated player 20 minutes.

250 points or more and less than 500 points difference

If there is a difference of 250 rating points and less than 500 rating points between the players, then the lower rated player will be given 50 minutes and the higher rated player 10 minutes.

500 points or more difference

If there is a difference of 500 or more rating points between the players, then the lower rated player will be given 55 minutes and the higher rated player 5 minutes.

Exception If Michael Schreenan is the higher rated player he will have no less than

10 minutes in any single game.

Recording of games The recording of games by players will be optional.

Unrated Players Unrated players will be given an estimated rating by the Tournament

Director at the start of the event.
