Waterfront Coordinator- 2024 Job Description

The Waterfront Coordinator is directly responsible to the Summer Camp Director.
All staff who work at a camp enjoy working with children and youth ages 6-17. Staff are enthusiastic and excited facilitators of a safe and fun summer camp for all participants.
*This is an on-site, overnight position. The successful applicant is expected to remain onsite for the duration of camp (with weekends off)
All staff promote a Christian community, based on United Church philosophy, in which every individual is treated with respect to make each camp experience a unique and fulfilling experience for all participants.
Responsibilities:
The Waterfront Coordinator also functions as a Programming Counsellor
Waterfront:
- Organizing and overseeing the waterfront area, equipment, and all waterfront programs and activities, including determining and setting up the appropriate safe swimming area with assistance and support
- Actively teaching and implementing a canoeing program. When unable to canoe due to weather, please note it is the Waterfront Coordinator’s responsibility to implement other activities during this session
- Ensuring that all waterfront procedures, practices, and policies are being adhered to while all waterfront activities are taking place
- Ensuring all waterfront activities are conducted safely, including making the final decision regarding waterfront sessions being unsafe to conduct or continue due to weather conditions
- Taking lead on all waterfront-related emergencies, including performing rescues where necessary
- Conducting inventory and safety inspections on all waterfront equipment at the beginning and end of the camp season. This inventory will be provided to the Camp Director
- Staying informed of all water conditions that may pose adverse health risks to swimmers and participants
- Such further and other duties that may be determined by the Director from time to time.
Program Counsellor:
- Planning and implementing activities during the day- Program Counsellors are not directly responsible for any cabin, though are responsible for regular assistance and supervision of campers when requested and is appropriate to do so
- Collaborate with a team to ensure daily schedules are planned in advance and consistent with the expectations of the Camp Director and Youth Camp Committee
- Providing a wide range of high quality and engaging activities, including physical activities, crafts, community building games, and skill building activities while taking into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of your colleagues, campers, weather conditions, weekly/daily themes if applicable, etc.
- Upholding the traditions of Bar Harbour Camp as outlined by the Youth Camp Committee while incorporating new programming into the daily schedule
- Consider the health concerns and physical limitations of campers in providing balanced and safe programming
- Recognizing when activities need to be altered with little-to-no-notice or time to plan and take immediate action to implement a new activity. This may occur due to weather, injury, or an activity that is unfit for the group
- Be an enthusiastic participant of all camp activities- leading campers by example
- Ensuring the mental and physical welfare of campers at all times. This includes but is not limited to: ensuring campers are wearing appropriate clothing (in accordance with camp dress code, protected from sun- i.e. hat and sunscreen, etc.), ensuring good hygiene is practiced, providing minor behavioural management and interventions independently, providing moderate to severe behavioural management and interventions with support, supporting the mental and emotional needs of campers, and being prepared to manage homesickness
- Partake in mentoring all Leaders in Training (LITs)- leading by example, allowing LIT to shadow your duties, provide opportunity for leadership development with your support, and providing constructive feedback
- Be familiar with camp emergency procedures- respect and comply with all camp policies and procedures
- Inspecting daily chore assignments after Cabin Counsellors have indicated they have been completed
- Communicate schedule changes in a timely manner to the Camp Director and Team Liaisons
- Ensuring all activities are set up prior to the start of the session and cleaned up at the end. This includes making sure all equipment used is back where it belongs and the space used is clean and organized
- Participate in daily program meetings to ensure plans are made for the next day and approved by the Camp Director
- Other tasks may include but are not limited to:
- Taking part in the check-in and check-out process for each camp
- Camp orientation for campers
- Daily chore assignments and additional cleaning tasks
- Assisting Cabin Counsellors with campers as needed (camper/cabin supervision, assisting with bedtime preparations, handling camper homesickness and illness, etc.)
- Serving meals
- Medication administration and recording
- Assisting in planning and implementing campfire entertainment
- Such further and other duties that may be determined by the Director from time to time
Skills and Attributes:
- Exceptional organizational and planning skills to implement daily schedules and activities effectively
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to explain activity instructions and maintain group structure for groups of campers ranging from approximately 10 to 48 depending on the session
- Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with colleagues and campers
- Ability to recognize burnout in a timely manner and implement effective and reasonable self-care strategies
- Ability to receive constructive feedback from the Camp Director, colleagues, volunteers, campers, and board members and apply the feedback accordingly to create a positive camp experience for all
- Exceptional patience and ability to self-regulate when faced with challenging situations and adversity
- Willingness to self-advocate, including asking for accommodations or additional breaks when needed, asking questions, pointing out discrepancies in scheduling or instructions, delegate tasks, etc.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude and ongoing adaptability with the frequent changes and challenges that arise
Qualifications:
- Current National Lifeguard (NL) Certification
- Standard First Aid and CPR certification
- Current (within 6 months) Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
- Current (within 1 year) Social Services Intervention Check (free from social services)
- Canoe Instructor Certification (or willingness to acquire and receive on-site training)
Remuneration: $625 per week (maximum 5 weeks), room and board provided
